easy,
Normaly you assign a image/texture to the colornode of a material. If you want to do what you are asking for, just map it to the Ambient Color node instead.
Its these steps and then you are done:
1. Create a new material
2. Open its attribute editor (Ctrl+A)
3. Click on the checker at the side of "Ambient Color"
4. Choose "file" if you are going to map a image for example.
5. Then select your image.
