  1. Not necessarily. It could be the other way around. We're a firm of over 100 architects and not a single in-house renderer. We've eliminated that position over the years. Each architect or team does their own rendering and most of the time it is good enough for the principals. They are still in awe whenever I get the chance to do renderings but I spend most of my time doing cd's in revit. If I hadn't had the foresight to learn revit 5 years ago I'd be out of job now.
  2. Thanks Tony. yes, all they did was upgrade to 2015. hardware remains the same. I have 24gb ram so this is not an issue. I was suspecting it has to do with visibility because 2015 has AO and shadows on by default. But even turning them off didn't improve the performance. Sigh,I ended up working back with 2010.
  3. I've been using 2012 since forever, and my company upgraded my version to 2015 recently. The same file I've been working on 2012 is a drag in 2015. I takes a while to move, rotate or even do anything. Could it be a graphic card compatibility? Appreciate any feedback.
  4. I never turn down work because the project 'sucks'. After all, I have not rendered a building where I really like the design.I always spell out clearly the timeframe I need to complete the job. I lost a lot of work because my competitor can do it faster. And that's fine with me.
  5. Everything's great and will even get better once you're done with people and tree lighting. I'm not crazy about the watrer though. Most hotels have their pool lit and have that turquoise tint to it.
  6. Hi Zoey, Can you give an indication of your prices, you can PM me.
  7. No matter how good you are, you're dispensable. The guy our company uses for rendering is good but hardly the best, some of my visuals are probably better than his. But my boss likes him, we like him. To answer your question, we need our clients more than they need us.
  8. Thanks for sharing. A colleague commented that the wheels seem to spin slower than their speed. Seems nitpicking, but on second look he's right.
  9. Reflected distortion is an inherent characteristic of glass, more with the processing rather than installation. There are many variables that contribute to this: airspace, thickness, coating etc. This is one issue in specifying glass, how much distortion is acceptable? Suppliers will have different answers, but I'm fine with distortion- I think it adds to the beauty of the building. If every reflection is perfect, reality would look like a 3d rendering.
  10. I hope so, just got a barcelona chair in a liquidation auction.
  11. Juraj is on point, you have to love architecture first. Harry mentioned Tadao Ando, interestingly my favorite architect. A self-taught architect, but even though he wasn't trained formally, he apprenticed with a builder for years. 10 years ago, it was common to see CAD/VIZ/BIM people with little or no architectural background. Employers hired based on software expertise. But that mindset has changed, in part due to arch grads who are well versed in CAD/Viz softwares coming out of school. CAD/Viz/BIM is no longer a plus, it's a must for these guys. Some architects, at least those I've worked with, prefer visualizers who speak their language. It helps if you can give valuable input in terms of proportion, scale, etc. But be mindful of their ego. There are firms (the larger ones) with a dedicated viz team, that's probably your best bet. For mid-sized firm, they'll probably expect you to do other things when viz jobs are in a lull. Hope this helps and good luck.
  12. try ASAI.org or any AIP old issues, also NYSR some of those dinosaurs are still there.
  13. Artist. We like to call ourselves 3d 'artist', visualization 'artist' because there are no laws that regulate the use of that title.
  14. Guys, Please remember it's not the architect's job to make your work easier. If it's too much of a hindrance, let them know that it will cost them more.
