  1. Thanks Corey! Those are both great ideas. I always like hearing different approaches to doing things. I like both your ideas and will give them a try! Cheers!
  2. Hello All... I'm looking for some tips on applying road markings at intersections. I'm using Gradient Ramp and Masking to create road lines on the main part of the road, but scratching my head on what to do at the intersection where the lines fillet together and there usually are other markings as well such as stop bars, lettering, crosswalks, etc... My thoughts so far are: 1) create additional polygon geometry at intersection and use multi/sub-object materials with map channels and different UVW's. 2) Create additional objects that sit on top of the road surface that will get the materials or 3) Photoshop the intersection linework in an image and then apply image to geometry with Unwrap UVW's. I'd love to hear some input on how you might accomplish this? Hopefully there are some easier and more elegant ways to accomplish this. One other question... How do you guys apply multiple bump maps to an object. For instance, sidewalks? Using a bump map for the texturing the concrete and another bump map for creating the expansion joints with gradient ramp. Right now I am using Composite Map in the Bump map channel and then blending the two together with different opacity and blending modes. It works, but again, is there a more elegant way to accomplish this? Thanks for any input and attached is an unfinished image of the road intersection.
  3. Thanks guys! I'll check out all these sites you've mentioned. Thanks again for your input. I really appreciate it.
  4. Hi, Where are your favorite places to get pre-made vehicle models for Max? I am looking for cars, trucks, semi-truck/trailers, planes, and heavy equimpent (i.e. Caterpillar). Having materials with the models would be nice. Thanks!
  5. Thanks for your reply Dan. The information was very helpful. I do not know much about Navisworks, so your information helped understand the program a little more. Thanks again!
  6. A client has asked me to produce a 3D model of an existing project (interstate cloverleaf bypass) that they want to then interactively play with by moving around in and turning on and off certain objects. They basically want to use the model to look at different construction sequencing. They also might want a 3D rendering of the project for presentation at a later date. I personally do my modeling in 3ds Max, so plan to model this project in that, because that is what I know. However, any input on whether Navisworks or Showcase would work better for interactively "playing" with the model? They both seem like they would provide the necessary function, but Showcase looks easier to use than Navisworks to me. It looks like 3ds Max files can be imported to either Navisworks or Showcase, so that shouldn't be a problem. Just wondering which would be an easier interface to use for the client to interactively navigate around? Thanks for any input.
  7. Thanks for the reply Salvador. I had the same problem when I ran a Quaddro video card (I think an FX 4000), so I don't think it is related to the video driver. Let me know if you find anything else out.
  8. Using 3ds Max 2012. After I use Paint Deformation, then the mouse buttons don't work. I see a mouse pointer on the screen and can move around, but can't select anything and right-click doesn't work (i.e. to bring up Quads). Mouse works for selecting menus and using the command panel, just can't select anything on the screen (objects). If I re-open the max file all is fine. Seems like a bug to me. Anyone else experience this? Any solutions? I saw a post on The AREA for same problem back in 2008, but no real solutions were given. Thanks for any input.
  9. Did you try pressing "X"? That toggles the gizmo on and off. Also, sometimes I forget to put an object back to top level. If you're in a sub-object mode sometimes you won't see the pivot icon. Not sure what else it could be, hope that helps.
  10. You can setup your own render farm on the cloud for Max. It takes a little bit of work to setup and requires a fairly fast "upload" speed internet connection. I've been using one I set-up since last summer and it works pretty good. I'm using Mental Ray though, not Vray.
  11. Nick, If your interested in seeing some veg created with GrowFX, I just posted a scene in the Arch Viz Gallery called "We Are Free". The trees and Ivy are all created with GrowFX. Probably not the best quality, cause I'm a noobie at Max, but from a distance I thought it turned out pretty decent. At least it was a lot of fun to build.
  12. Looks good link didn't work for me. Get "Internal Server Error". I use GrowFX for creating vegetation, works well for me and price is right.
  13. Studio/Institution: Personal Genre: Landscaping Software: 3ds Max Description: First "personal" project. Needed something to practice Max with, so came up with this patio scene. Slideshow can be viewed here We AreFree.WMV
  14. Thanks again! Those are the answeres I was looking for. Take care.
  15. Thanks Andrew! I really appeciate this site for feedback. From your list, I am considering the two Viewsonics (VP2365). Not sure if I should spend a little extra and go with the Eco friendly LED backlight one or not. Tempted to just stay with the non-LED. Other than energy consumption, what is the difference between the two? Is the LED backlit one brighter? I've read some reviews that say sometimes these seem too bright. Thoughts?
