  1. I have tried to run a back office in a former soviet republic where wage bills are lower but (not cheap) and it is very difficult without being there to manage the work these people do. Sadly I do not hold the quality in high regard and the accuracy is frightening. Jobs I would not dare say are half done are sent as final issue and the delay and time take to get the results I demand just mean its better to get a proper artist to do it. Notice I use the word artist - Im not talking about techies who got the fastest machine with all the plugins and software.... Im talking about artists who can light and compose a shot properly - What happened to people wanting images that are artistically dramatic and illustrations that sell a development. Back in the day Arch Illustrators got on with it and produced images which sold developments. They didn't blame their brushes for leaving bristles on the paper or for the limitations in their work. They required talent and skill to do the work. 3D illustration is the same.... Composition lighting and anything non generic that you require cannot be doing properly without an eye for art. I dont care which version of vray your running or where you got it from Legal or otherwise.... I do think we have our hands full with the emerging markets where EULA means nothing to the people and the governments that preside over the people. When people are starving and living in the street - when more than 50% of people live in abject poverty - the government has more on its hands than EULA. I can understand this BUT at the same time - in places where we are subject to legislation we cannot compete with people who can pretty much do what they want as long as they can cobble enough money together to buy a PC in the first place. All I know is - quality is key - sure cost matters because if your 10x more expensive than the next man - unless your offering something pretty damn special your competitor will get the job. As an architect and comissioner of arch viz - those images do not appeal to me in the slightest - yeah they are good but the fact it cost $100 or $200 to do doesnt have me reaching for the phone or feverishly searching for their contact details.... That email would go in the bin with all the other crap I get. I use people I know and trust. The same reason our clients come back time and time again.
  2. Well with advice like this you're sure to be able to learn and prosper with your 3D work. Thanks Miggity - clearly need to familiarise yourself with the spirit of CGarchitect. There are lots of very talented and willing people who will offer help with your work. Be helpful - be constructive - Use the skill set around you for your benefit.
  3. Fair play... I got a Dell and I get 1.5 to 2 hours from it doing 3d stuff. Its a Core 2 Duo with 4 gig ram and 15.4 screen. That kind of batter life is ok but not enough that I can get any meaningful work done. I just dont see an untethered laptop is a viable 3D solution - Sure on the mains its fine.. Powerful enough to do most stuff- infact my Laptop is currently quicker than my Decrepit old Dual Xeon 2.8 at home... But off the mains its just not got enough power to allow me to do anything serious on the move.
  4. V NICE - all id say is the grass but that's not news to you. Well done - INTERIORS COME ON
  5. Image - 1 & 2 - the house exterior at twilight - lighting is delicious - its got the mood spot on really really nice. Image 3 & 4 dont grab me - although the detail in image 4 with the big louvre screen is nice - can see you have put the work into that - just not capturing my imagination as much as the first two despite its complexity. Good work -
  6. absolutely my friend... good work - minor niggle on the noise. Nice work - keep it up. Do me a fav - we just relaunched our site - can you have a look and if you have any C&C id be glad to hear from you on it. We are UK Architects based in Manchester. Cheers - James
  7. Hi... first up -= good work - generally good mate. The tile map on the roof looks a bit over sized.... and the colour variation is a bit much. Looks a touch artificial. The white is over white - looks too clean too bright. Perhaps drop it a bit. The car looks comp'd on too - not convinced its an integral part of the scene. Generally nice work...well done
  8. Ok..... Nice floor Nice Rug Dont brighten the image.... im tired of seeing CG interiors that all look the same (on that note they are right about the illuminated recessed soffit) - although good work up there because the lighting is smooth and doesn't suffer from hotspots or waves in the light wash. The image on the right hand wall ideally need some kind of contact shadows... they lack detail where they touch the wall and it will help make them look like billboarded. Maybe blend some AO into the image in PS and bring stuff out a touch where you need it - mask and adjust opacity in the areas that need / dont need the detail to suit. Nice work though man. - Nice mood
  9. FINALLY SOME SENSE - THIS IS THE ANSWER MY FRIEND. The laptop will suffer from battery life so badly with all that kit in it if operating at full chat that its practically a static machine anyway. FORGET a portable workstation - Two machines is a much better way out ! and probably with some change mate
  10. Looks good - not sure if you need more samples in your floor - looks a bit noisy to me - could just be the res of your posted image though. Best Wishes.
  11. I hate VISTA - i'll start there. I have been running CS4 on XP64 at home and its fine - Wanted to check it before i upgrade all the machines at the office. XP64 has presented me with only 2 problems so far. Itunes does not burn CD's it cant find the driver for the CD burner - Well thats not a big issue for our office workstations - prevents people burning music on office time. XP64 - no driver for the Gigabit network card in our Dell PowerEdge server - so had to get a cheap 10/100 card for it instead - no major trauma. Other than that - All is well and running x64 apps particularly RAM hungry ones has been peachy. I wont go on about Vista but for me - as a business power user it sets you more steps off the function you want. ie. getting to network properties now takes more clicks and is less direct. I hate dumbed down flowery interfaces - Gimme windows 2000 any day - Aero is great if your in the Mac crew who sit looking at how pretty their setup is instead of rolling your sleeves up and actually creating something. Vista is poor and the sooner Windows 7 is out the better. Maybe this will represent some progress. I feel Vista is almost like ME was in at the beginning of the 2000's
  12. Well done - Generally its good - There is an element of it that looks "illustrated" its almost a bit too model like - ie it looks like a plastic model in parts The second link to the image is the stronger of the two you posted. I think it looks much better. There is something throwing it all off in the first link and i cant put my finger on it. There is a UV issue on your kerb stones to i think its got a very regular vertical grain. Generally good though - Gives them a good indication of what they are getting.
  13. Dear CGarchitect community. I realise this is not strictly a new "finished work" post but it does related to our most up to date and complete work. After 2 years of being to busy to do an update the entire site has been redesigned and was launched last week. We have a variety of different work on the site some of which is produced using finalRender. please visit our new site and take a look around we are manchester architects and work nationally and internationally on all sorts of different projects. Thanks for taking a few minutes to have a look around - C&C welcome Best Wishes JHindley
  14. Hi, I have tried this before and with the reflection map I struggled to get the drama your seeing here. The material and reflectivity can be achieved but not the flares - without effects or post - I personally for speed (as long as your not animating) would choose to post fix this and "paint" the highlights and flares in with photoshop. Generally the time taken to get the effect and the highlights where you want them with the correct intensity is just not worth it. As long as you have only a handful of stills to the quickest most satisfying way to do this is by hand. Hope this helps - try some custom brushes in photoshop which you can get for free by simply googling photoshop brushes. Im am currently getting a resources section together for our new website which will contain useful bits and pieces for doing such things. Keep an eye on SW Foulkes Architects new website and hopefully in the near future this can become a useful resource. J Hindley
