  1. Hey, thanks for your reply. So, the geometry comes across clean with .dwg? I was a little concerned when I came across some past posts that suggested that using .dwg method was bringing the model into Max with extra faces -messy geometry.
  2. Hello everyone, I will be working with a job that has been done in Chief Architect. It will be imported into 3ds Max 2010. Does anyone know what file format would be best for exporting? Also with importing someone mentioned in a 2005 post that you would be best off using a .obj plugin for import in order to get a clean mesh. Anyone have experience with importing this type of work? Much appreciated - Thanks:)
  3. Hello, I am working wiht a external scene - I usually use the daylight system with mental ray but I have a hdri image that I would like to use for lighting and the background. Should I use a standard skylight for hdri? Also, which exposure control setting would be the best - Logarithmic for example? Any help would be appreciated Regards
  4. Hi, maybe you can re-install max. Sounds like a software thing - just a thought
  5. Hello, Would someone be able to help. I have am using a muti/suboject material and within that I have a arch & design material with a brick bitmap in the colour slot. I have been trying tweak my settings within the material but every time I adjust it, the loft renders black and then I can't get my material to appear again. Has anyone got any idea what might be happening here? I was thinking that it might be the geometry within the loft but not sure?? Any suggestions would be most helpful Cheers
  6. Hey, thanks for the replies. Jeff, I have been wanting to get the third book for sometime now (advanced to expert). I didn't realise that the book had your colour management chapter in it. much appreciated, thanks
  7. Hello, I have been asked to produce a visualisation where they need a very accurate render (specific colours, materials etc). I also need to print this job out as part of a brochure. Is it possible to get close colour matching and also how do I choose the right rgb values and then know that they will be anything like a cmyk colour for print? Any information on this topic would be helpful - Thanks
  8. Hello, I need to produce a piece of work that depicts fairly accurate colour for the various materials used - external walls, tiles, gutters etc. (The scene is external and I am using Mental Ray) I am trying to decide whether I should use a Skylight HDRI setup or a daylight system to light the scene. Can you get close colour results with this root? I have read in Brian's book at 3DATS that you can get close results using exposure control and by taking the square of each RGB value. Could anyone tell me if this method is only used with daylight system lighting? I have seen some pretty amazing daylight scenes lit by HDRI lately and would love to give this method ago. I thought that HDRI was only used for dusk and low lit scenes? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou
  9. Hi all, I have some tree models that don't have texture maps - can I easily create my own? how hard is it to match maps with the geometry of a tree? What is the correct procedure? I have heard that custom maps is where you get real photo realism. Is this correct? If so, how is the best way to make them? - leaves in particular. I have looked through the posts regarding these questions but haven't found a great deal yet. Thanks for any tips you can give me on mapping vegetation.
  10. Dear Jeff and team, Could I please have permission to change my user name. I would prefer to go under my real name + the user name that I am currently use was something I made up off the top of my head and I now don't really like it. How do I go about changing it? Kind Regards Nigel Lewis
  11. Hi Stefan, Thanks again for information regarding these render engines. It will certainly help anyone make an educated decision with choosing a suitable renderer for specific needs. Cheers
  12. Thanks Stefan, that is really helpful for me at this point. Yes Fryrenderd Arion sound great! At this stage I am doing more external projects but intend to do interiors as well. Could you say that biased renderers like V-ray are better for external projects? Unbiased for interiors (interiors using more photons)? or is this nonsense?? Generally what projects render better? I think if I ask these questions before diving into rendering in depth I could save myself a lot of time. Thanks again for getting back to me. Cheers;)
  13. Hello Fran, How is Fry Render in terms of ease of use? Secondly, you mentioned that you sometimes use V-ray, is it easy enough to switch between the two once you know one of these software packages? The reason for me asking is that I would like to start using Fry render, however I am aware that there are many jobs advertised for 3d Vis artists that need V-ray. So, yeh is the technology similar?
  14. Yes, looks good. I will try it out Cheers
