  1. Hi Steve, Good to know that you have not had any trouble with your Benq monitor. Likely that issue has been resolved. I don't have a need for the kvm but understand how handy it is, I used to have a kvm when I ran two computers and it was pretty slick, having it built into the monitor sounds very nice for those who can make use of it. I just run one computer now. Thanks again for your valuable input!
  2. Hi Steve thanks for your reply! That Benq was my first choice and still a strong consideration due to price. I got concerned about it when I read all the negative reviews on Amazon. Seems there was a problem with flickering and also dead pixels. Possibly they have gotten that resolved. They are about $700 right now on Amazon. I found the Dell as a like new/ open box thru Amazon for $800 trying to decide which to get.
  3. Hi Francisco, Thank sfor your reply. Very helpful. Note: I am replacing the 2- Dell 2007FP monitors with 1- Dell Ultrasharp 32"
  4. I do arch viz, using current versions of 3DS Max and Vray with CPU rendering. Have not transitioned to GPU rendering. I do not use games or watch movies on this workstation. Other existing workstation specs - Core i7 6950/64 G RAM, Win 10 Seeking opinion/advice for anyone with hardware expertise. Planning to : Replace existing dual 20" Dell2007FP monitors with Dell Ultrasharp 32" UP3216Q Replace existing GeForce GTX 750 Ti with Geforce RTX 2060. thi swill be the dedicated card for Max user interface, photoshop, main system display, etc. Additional near future plan is to add a 2nd video card, like RTX 2080 Ti, to make use of vray hybrid rendering. All the various models and configurations of these graphics cards is bewildering. not easy to sort through and make sense of with my amateur level of technical hardware expertise. Any help or advice much appreciated.
  5. the can't add edit poly to group of edit polys is a known bug. I use that quite often. My last experience with 2017 I could not add an edit poly to a set of grouped polys.... but I could add an edit mesh to the grouped polys.
  6. After re-install the crash on render completion seems to have been fixed. I'll do some more testing and hopefully start using Max 2017
  7. thank you philip. That info helps and I'm suspecting that my particular system has some unique hiccup that 2017 doesn't like. rats. I'm going to try an un-install - re-install and see what happens. I'll post update here after re-install
  8. Thank you Francisco. I also usually wait to update, at least until there is a first service pack and a new/compatable vray version available. That's what I did this time. I have lost track of how many upgrades I've done. I have upgraded to each new release starting with 3D Studio 4.0 (dos). Usually has worked out OK. I seem to recall having to wait about a year to be able to use one or two other releases. This 2017 seems to be in that category, at least on my system. It's been a long time since I've seen this type of serious un-usability problem. I am concerned that somehow my system just doesn't work with 2017. Even a scene with only one object, poof/crash/gone on render completion with vray.
  9. thanks for bumping my thread! I was wondering if it was just me having troubles. I did get some replies on the chaos group forum. A lot of people there seem to be having trouble with multiple aspects of max 2017. I was directed to the Autodesk forum and there are a lot of users reporting problems and un-usability there as well. Just not as evident here on cg architect I guess.
  10. Hi, I am using 3ds max 2016 with vray 3.40.02 on Windows 7 64 bit. works great and no problems. Now I'm trying to use the latest 3ds max 2017 with vray 3.40.02 and it crashes on render completion every time. This is true at low res or high res. Also crashes regardless of save file selected or not. I completed a scene in 2016 and it renders fine. If I open that scene in 2017 it crashes as soon as the render completes. Anyone else having this trouble? Any suggestions for trouble shooting? Thanks for any help.
  11. Hi, I'm using Max 2016, Vray, Windows 7. I'm seeking advice on how I might best manage my user configures map paths while moving form Max 2016 to Max 2017 My system has a solid state drive, "C" where all my apps including Max are installed. There is another drive, "D", where I keep all my user generated files. So I have a folder structure D:Myfiles/Max that has a subfolder for each project. D:Myfiles/Max/project1, D:Myfiles/Max/project2, and so on. When starting a new project I assign/create a project folder in Max like - D:Myfiles/Max/project1. For some reason and seemingly on a random basis, when I open a work in progress, it will sometime redirect the project folder to a location that is buried in the C:Program Files/User/ Autodesk/3DS MAx 2016/and so on directory and I need to point it back to the project folder I had set up under D:Max. Weird, inconvenient and not what I want but I can check that and revert it to my preferred project folder as needed. My question really concerns how to handle and keep using across success Max upgrades my user map path configuration. I have a bunch of maps in various folders under D:Myfiles/Max/mymaps, D:Myfiles/Max/mymaps/wood, D:Myfiles/Max/mymaps/stone, D:Myfiles/Max/mymesh/xfrog and son on. I have entered all the paths into the config user paths. Then I saved that as D:Max/my-map-paths.mxp. I was trying to use Max 2017 and load that my-map-paths.mxp file but it is causing the MAX project folder to switch from D:Max/project1 to D:Max. now I'm having th esame trouble with 2016 and my whole long used map path set up seems to be one big mess. My desire is to have all my user configured map paths load up with every project. All my maps always available in the user config paths for all projects. I suspect I'm making things harder on myself than need be, that's usually the case. Any suggestions for how others use the project folder and user map path configuration would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!
  12. I installed SP2 and EXT2 and everything seems to work ok including saving maps/image files in pshop when open in max.
  13. Stephen, I am using Max 2016 SP1 and I am not having the problem. Just checked with .psd and .jpg maps open in Max scene and then adjusted in pshop and saved no problem. I do recall that I originally fixed the problem in 2015 by doing the SP and Extension updates. I seem to further recall that the problem came back with 2016 and then I did whatever updates were available and it was fixed. I also see that I have 2016 EXT1 installed. You may need that. To make things more complicated I just got an alert to install, for 2016, EXT2 and SP2. I'm going to do that now and hopefully that won't cause any trouble. Then I will get back to work.
  14. Josef, Thank you. I did not receive notice that a sp1 was available. Installed sp1 and that fixed the problem.
  15. I have a whole lot of textures built up as layered .psd files. For many years my workflow has been to tweak these textures in .psd, save file and then re-render in Max to see the changes made. Now as of updating to 2016 I cannot save a .psd file in photoshop if that same file is being used in my opened scene in Max 2016. I know from google search that others are experiencing this serious inconvenience. Any ideas for work arounds or...?
