  1. Thanks very much for posting a reply Corey. I have never used nuke before so its a bit confusing. From a quick look at the page you linked to it seems like it produces some sort of matte/mask. Will this allow me to replace a texture with another in just a couple of clicks and have the texture line up exactly. For example if I had a coke bottle render could I change the label from 'coke' to 'diet coke' by simply selection a new base texture and it line up perfectly? You can composite all the vray passes in nuke or AE etc but this colimo is able to keep the UVW information at the same time which is something I am having a hard time finding other programs/methods capable of doing. (The reason we chose to use Colimo originally was because its so simple that we can get an intern to do it with little or no training.) Thanks again
  2. Hi I've been using Motiva Colimo to take a render and then quickly roll out lots of versions of the same scene with different diffuse textures while keeping lighting and reflections etc unchanged, all in post without re-rendering each time. This software is temperamental to say the least and crashes constantly. Does anyone know a way to do this with other software please? Or have any experience with Colimo 1.8 to advise me how to avoid these crashes? Thanks Adam
  3. Cheers PSU was a Corsair AX1200 Edit: CPUs were Xeon X5660 on a supermicro mobo..
  4. Thanks for the replies. I appreciate the response, sorry for the delay in posting back. I did a memtest and checked the RAM modules, swapped out the graphics cards etc but that's where my expertise ran out. I needed a resolution quickly and guessing that it was a hardwear problem I ended up having to ring a guy to take it away and test it. After 5hrs of testing, turns out that the motherboard has a fault, the PSU has one dodgy rail and I have melted one of my CPU's. So it looks like an expensive rebuild is on the cards I've been looking at 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2630 V3 S2011-3 Haswell 8 Core 2.4ghz Any thoughts? 2.4 instead of 2.8ghz, but a much newer chip and 8 cores so I think they could munch through renders quite well..? Thanks again Ad
  5. Hi, I have had a dual Xeon workstation for about 4yrs and it has worked fine with no problems. About two yrs ago I purchased an I7 workstation (as was always the plan) which is now my main modeling machine leaving my older one to do the grunt of the rendering etc.. About 8 months ago I decided to set up Vray DR across these machines. All has worked brilliantly up until this month. Now when I render an image using this set up they both jump in and start rendering fine, but around 1hr into the render the dual Xeon machine gives up. It crashes and the monitor linked to it goes black, but with a white cursor blinking in the top left corner. It doesn't seem to over heat (its liquid cooled with 2x corsair Hydro H80's), as its freezing in my attic studio this time of year (writing this with gloves on), and it was fine over the summer. I swapped out the graphics card with a different one just as a test but as I thought that's not the problem. I'm stuck really and don't know where to go from here. I need to get this sorted asap as I promised a mate I would do some Architectural Visuals over xmas, so any help would be massively appreciated!! Thanks Adam
  6. The DS1513+ caught my eye too. I think its the one I will go with. I also looked at the WD Red drives and would like to know the pro's and con's over normal HDD's. Will the slower Rpm be a problem when network rendering? Also, is there any advice for and against using SSD's in Nas devices? Synology does say they are compatable with this DiscStation. Was contemplating having the one SSD just for my texture library, any thoughts?
  7. Cheers Fella's Will probably keep the V5900 and move it to the new machine. I do use Rt in my work but could do with it being a tad faster. The 580 will do for now and maybe look at the GTX 780 at a later date if its based on the GK110. One last question, can you make use of a No of GPU's over a network then in RT? Thanks again for the advice everyone!
  8. Sorry I couldn't remember the model. Its the FirePro V5900. I hadn't thought too much about that as it is going to stay in the current machine. I had thought the Quadro K4000 would have contributed quite a lot to the Cuda engine in RT as well as being a good display driver. How would the V5900 compare to the Quadro K4000?
  9. That's pretty good then, I had the GTX580 as the second card in my current machine. With an ATI eyefinity card as the display driver (I forget which model). Its the 3GB GTX580 card i have so that should handle all my scenes, and if I get the Quadro K4000 at 2GB i should be fine then. Apart from any driver conflicts as you say. I believe the GTX770 will be out later this month, how do you think that would compare with the other cards out of interest? Thanks again mate!!
  10. Thanks Jeff, Dimitris, Some great advice, love this forum! Jeff- Looks like I will be getting a Synology NAS then. Which Model do you have? Dimitris, Read your comment (twice) . I think I understand it a bit better now thanks. So I could go with a Quadro for stability, power consumption, being Quieter and cooler. The current workstation I mentioned, I built 2yrs ago has a GTX580 in it. Could I have the Quadro as the primary card for modelling etc and put the GTX580 or newer GTX (you mentioned the 680) in a secondary slot and have to two cards assigned as the Cuda engine in VrayRt? Is this possible? Will this give me the stability etc during the everyday modelling, and the extra power only when I need it in RT? Thanks again!
  11. Thanks dude. Will have a look. I think just a NAS may be the way to go. Had a look at LaCie, Qnap and Thecus also. LaCie had as a backup to cloud too I believe but seem a tad pricey.
  12. Hello, I have two topics I need some advice on please. They are sort of linked. I currently have a twin Zeon machine I am using, but am wanting to move this to be my renderer and build a working machine for modelling & test renders etc. 1. I need to make a decision on the graphics card. Do I go with a couple of GTX cards or a Quadro? Is it all about the CUDA, the more the better? I am wanting to get the best performance in VrayRT as I can. 2. With my work now being spread out over more than one machine. I am wanting some sort of network storage/server. However I know nothing about this other than I want to be able to have 2-3 machines all reading/writing and rendering etc from the same drives. (With one of the drives providing media to the rest of my house). I'm not sure if just a Nas or an all in one server/storage device would suit me best? Is windows server hard to get your head around for a novice? I have seen a few with that installed and it's a bit off putting atm. I would like to spend around £500 -($7-800) and have 5-8 drive bays if possible. Any recommendation or insight into this would be a great help. Cheers Adam
  13. Hi Andrew, I've got most of the components through now just waiting on the motherboard. - (I chose a Supermicro X8DAI in the end) This ok? I have one last question before I start this build. Your earlier comment was to put the ATI V5900 in the primary PCIe slot with the displays plugged into, and the GFX 580 3GB in the secondary slot for the CUDA. I'm new to this type of setup and there fore my troubleshooting abilities won't be great. Are there any special settings I need to configure regarding Max or windows or the way the drivers are used etc or will your above instruction allow a simple plug and play? If there is a dummy's guide to this out there, I would feel a lot less nervous? Thanks again Adam
  14. Thanks, Lots to consider then. To be honest I understand where Tom is coming from. At this point I rarely need two computers as I render everything over night, which works fine for me. It will be something I bare in mind in the future though thanks Tom. "But a dual 1366 Xeon board means you need to install memory in matched sets of six because there are six channels (three per CPU)." - So you mean 3 x 4GB Modules of triple channel Memory per CPU for example? Thanks again for your help guys would have really struggled without your input! Ad
  15. Cheers Tommy, I see your point. Think its turned into an entire new workstation now instead of an upgrade. So I will be able to use my old one also. Andrew, did you have chance to check out my other questions yet? Also do I have to have ECC reg - RAM? Thanks all Ad
