1. I have applied the basic cylindrical mapping and after a few more changes that I missed before (didnt see the real world mapping option on the UVW map modifier) I got the wood looking ok. Now the problem is, I think there is some stretching here. Now on a normal box piece I know how to fix the mapping, but I have not ever had to do it on a cylindrical piece. Is there an easy method? Or is the attached piece in good shape for a wood texture? http://www.terranuts.com/forums/showpost.php?p=123428&postcount=46 I have to post a link to another forum as I simply cant get the images to load up, still getting the error 500 message.
2. Thanks for the information Also, it turns out part of the problem was I was using real world scale for the bitmap as well (this was intended) though I was not clicking that option in the UV map rollout though. Therefore the solid colors I believe. Now that I have that clicked it appears to be working a bit better.
3. I have a somewhat simple chair that I have been working on. Now I got the modeling part down find, but as I was following some texturing tutorials to help me learn that I came across the issue that when I tried to apply the wood texture that is the case this time, it just shows as a solid color. I figured it had something to do with the UV maps so I applied the basic UV Map modifier inside of 3ds max and tried all the presets on there and I cant seem to get anything to work right. Now I guess my question is, would the correct course of action be to unwrap the chair legs? Or is there another method that you guys use to speed the process faster? Unwrapping is an area that I am sorely lacking in, so I am unsure of all the subtleties that can come with this area of 3ds max. Below is an image of the leg in question. Its got two iterations of turbosmooth on it right now, would it matter much if I unwrapped the unturbosmoothed model? Or would I have to do it with the turbosmooth? Or as I asked before, is there a better method I dont know about? I wanted to add an image of the chair leg as I have it modeled, but I cant seem to get it to upload I keep getting an error 500 message or something.
4. I have been having an issue over the last couple of days. I will say I am relatively new to Vray, have only been tinkering around with it for a few days now as well. I have a Matte black material I have setup with it, it renders out great. The issue is though, in the viewport everything looks degraded and transparent. Looks like some polys are flipped even though they are not. I believe its the material as I noticed the glass material does not have the issue (outside of transparent which it should be) but also if I just attach a plain Vraymtl to it, the display switches back to being fine. Vice versa, if I then go and reattach the Matte Black to it, goes all wonky again. I first had the issue pop up last night, posted about it in another thread but realized its probably a Vray issue and would be better suited to here. The funny thing is though, it didnt happen for the first 2 days of tinkering with vray, just randomly popped up last night. Is there some way to fix this? Is it possible its just because of my video/graphics card? I am on a simple laptop working with these as I have not bought a dedicated desktop yet. Here is the image of the final render and the problem i am seeing in my viewport.
5. Then I guess I have been freaking out for no reason. Thanks for the info. Also, any idea what causes this? The model itself renders out great, but for some reason my display goes all crazy after I add in the VRay lights. Not sure whats causing it to be honest. At first I thought something went bonkers with the model, but, after remodeling the whole thing, I got the lighting setup in there, render a few times.. now its all kinds of crazy. Even after deleting the vray lights and all its still messed up. Ive attached the render as well just to show that that part runs fine.
6. I had thought though that the MTL file that saves in association with the OBJ file held the materials so that they could be brought over into other apps?
7. I have been trying to get myself back into modeling for a bit here, though I have come across some issues I cant seem to fix. I have an object, a simple side table that I had been working on just for an easy exercise. I have been messing with Vray as of late as my renderer. Anyway, I got results I like and everything was fine. I export the model out as an OBJ, goes through fine. I try to import it back into max, load up the file (with the MTL file in same folder), it loads up the object fine, but none of my materials are attached to it. Now is there something I am doing wrong when I export these? The materials are just procedural, so there is no Bitmap or anything that I am using. Ive just not ever had this issue before in the past. any ideas?
