  1. I have an issue where my onscreen image - within the GUI of max 2013 isn't matching the same rendered file when saved. The saved file turns out much much darker. Below is a shot of the saved image (left) and the onscreen image (right)... this file is saved as a .jpg but even rendered animations turn out to the same. I'm using Max 2013, Mental Ray, on a Dell Precision m6500 (i7 x940, quadro fx 3800m) Thoughts/advice? thank you.
  2. Ernest: You're right on ... the energy of the city is mesmerizing and quite honestly, inspiring. The cost of living is somewhat absurd but the opportunities afforded by the city make up for it if you hustle. Like anything, it's a give and take. Good luck and happy hunting! Dimitris: I didn't go to Sci-Arc for grad school due to not really feeling the vibe of LA... not that it's bad, just different. Enjoy that house (said from my shoebox;))
  3. ...haha, it isn't all that bad considering everything NYC has to offer Glad you're happy with the purchase Ernest!
  4. I've been using several incarnations of Dell's Precision M line since the 6400, now the 6600 and have no complaints aside from the fact that it's quite heavy. The screen is great and for laptops, the machine performs pretty well but does run hot. The M4600/M4700 are smaller @ 15.6" and are a little bit lighter with very similar specs. Ernest, I'm assuming this won't be your primary workstation but I'd still get as much hardware for your dollar as possible and would consider offerings from Asus, etc.
  5. Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been on here but, as always, am appreciating all of the great advice! Here's the situation, I'm getting back into the freelancing ring and will be looking to experiment and exploit GPU rendering with Octane, Iray, and VrayRT. As such, I know that requires a pretty robust system and I'm drooling at the idea of building a skt 2011 3930k system on an Asus X79 WS board but, with the cost of high-end GPU's am apprehensive of investing that much money, at this point. However, I know that with Haswell on the horizon, and being pretty dissapointing in terms of ROI for us, a socket 2011, 4GPU capable system is about as future proof as you can get for the forseeable future. Moving forward. I have found a system that I would consider a mid-range 3d workstation with very good components, but some better than others for a VERY reasonable price of $840. Used system - the specs: CPU: 3770k HSF: Corsair H60 OS: windows ultimate RAM: 8gb ram, 4x2 pc3 12800 MOBO: Asrock extreme 4 z77 1155 (max 2 gpu's) LG blu-ray drive GPU: 2x: gtx555 (these would get me started but need upgraded), seller will swap these for single GTX 480 HD: WD 500gb 7200rpm BSD PSU: Corsair hx1050X (very good PSU) CASE: Corsair 800D (Very high-end case) ...As you can see, that is a good starter machine. Upgrade the RAM, GPU's, and add a small SSD and i think I'd have a very respectable workstation at a hell of a price. Spec'd new on Newegg an equivalent system is +/- $1600 so it's a deal as the PSU, Case, and CPU alone are still worth more than the asking price for everything. I'm hesitant to pass up on this but still have the itch to not spend money unwisely and can't shake the bug to go full-on socket 2011. with upgrades to the used machine used machine purchase price - 840 RAM - 125 GPU - 450 (evga GTX 470 4gb Superclocked) SSD - 125 (128gb for OS and programs) so the total, including upgrades comes out to +/- $1540 for an I7-3770k machine. Respectable numbers, I think, to get me back in the ring. the new custom socket 2011 system I'm thinking about: CPU: 3930k HSF: hyper 212 evo (upgrade to h100i later...? or purchase now? potatoes/potaatooes) MOBO: asus p9x79 ws (up to 4 GPU's) STORAGE: wd black 1tb BSD GPU: evga 670 4gb (single card at this point) PSU: hx 1050x RAM: HyperX Beast 2x8gb 2133 SSD: Crucial M4 128bg SataIII MLC CASE: Rosewill Thor V2 this thing weighs in @ $2464, will perform better, and get me further down the road with overall CPU power, the ability to add 3 more GPU's when needed, and more RAM expandability but is significantly more expensive than the other option I'm considering... so my quandry is, is the extra $1000 spent now, worth it?" The answer is relative, I understand, but would appreciate some perspectives on my issue. I could also build a 3570k, 1155 system and shave about $500 from the socket 2011 system... final thoughts, what would you do in my situation? I'm trying to save $$ but don't want to make the wrong decision and spend money unwisely. Thank you for your time!
  6. Hey guys, I'm working with Acad 2013 and am trying to flatten reference .dwg's for use in building my models. However the files that I"m flattening are not large, but are not receiving the "flatten" command as desired... I select objects, "flatten", N (do not delete hidden lines), and wait for the command to run. first thing, it takes a LONG time for the command to run on a small file and secondly... the command isn't flattening all of the linework... any advice... tips? Prost! edit: I should mention I'm running windows 7 ultimate on a Dell Precision 4600 with plenty of hardware...
  7. I was working from a laptop with an external monitor when I shut down and left backburner monitor open on the 2nd display. Now when I open backburner monitor, it snaps to the other monitor thinking it's still connected and I can't get it back to my laptop display (the only one I'm working from right now... this is maddeningly frustrating! On Windows XP, you could right click on the taskbar program icon, select "move", and sometimes drag it from the digital abyss back to the desktop but I don't know how to do that with Windows 7... thanks and prost!
  8. Hi guys, I'm trying to get rid of the artifacts in this image where it appears to be shadows near the top of the building. I'm rendering with Max 2012 with default settings and a daylight system. GI is turned on and the geometry is imported .fbx from revit. Please advise how to get rid of this shadow effect! I think it's just a setting somewhere in Mental Ray that I'm not toggling... Prost!
  9. So I'm in the market for a new mouse and need the wireless variety this time around and am looking for feedback on what my 3d colleagues are using. A lot of parts look pretty nice but I can't handle the "tilt" wheel, and all-in-all, I really need just basic functionality and don't mind spending a bit more for quality. My long-standing favorite has been the simple Logitech MX310... http://www.logitech.com/en-us/473/340 thanks!
  10. thanks for the tips guys! ...well, i got lucky and restarted the computer a few times this morning and the window reappeared! @coreyMBeaulie - you're right about letting the render finish then "viewing rendered window" but I was working iwth IRAY and unlimited iterations! prost!
  11. ... is there a shortcut? shift+q doesn't show it... hitting the "rendered frame window" doesn't show it... what the heck?!
  12. Hey guys, I just installed and am playing with 2012 Design and am confused at the fact that the scanline isn't making use of all of the cores on my machine (4cores - 8ht) when rendering. Is there a way to make use of all cores with scanline? Thanks.
  13. fwiw: for video cards, I like the EVGA GTX 570 HD with 2.5 gb's of vram. It's not the 3.0gb of vram on some GTX 580's but you're paying $165 more for 512mb's more of vram and only 32 more processing cores for the 580. also, the z68 chipset has a nice feature "SRT" that makes great use of SSD's that might be of interest to you. From what I can gather, the Z68's overclock as well as the P67's.
