1. Hey guys, I'm looking to improve workflow and was wondering if a script like this is possible of even exists? I am constantly importing 3d furniture models from my CAD dept. I go through all their layers (40+) and combine and clean them up for my needs. For example I may get the layers CAD1 , CAD2, CAD3 and clean it up in Max to look like MAX1 = [CAD1,CAD2], MAX 2 = [CAD3]. So now I have only 2 layers made in Max. Anyways is there a script that I can run that will take the CAD layers and automatically combine then re-assign to my pre-made layers? I hope this isn't to confusing. I just do this so often I'm looking for some shortcuts here and since CAD's layers names never change I don't have to worry about any issues there. Thanks for any advice in advance! Jimmie
2. This is a question which has baffled me for a while. Should I use Exposure controls or not? My work generally includes Architectural rendering and product rendering using V-Ray. For the past year or two I haven't used any type of exposure control and haven't seen the need for it. To me it just seems like more settings to have to control for no gain. I realize there must be a good argument for using them but I haven't found it yet? Do most people use these settings, and if so, what are the benefits they are seeing? What am I missing? If it is simply to make the camera act more like a real camera in the real world I can do without them. Is there any benefit between using and not using these setting for V-Ray or MR? Thanks for clearing up this for me! Jimmie

What the #### is this?

John was correct. It was the 2012 Nitrous that was doing it. Not sure how to fix it yet, other then switching back to OpenGL or Direct 3d, which isn't as good as the Nitrous (in my minimal experience so far). For now I'll just deal with the small quarks. If anyone finds a solution for this please let me know.

Hey guys, I finally figured it out. It was the 2012 Nitrous that was doing it. Ghost?

Hey guys I posted this problem a week ago with no real response, so I thought I'd try again. I posted 2 images, one wire frame, one shaded. The object in question is the telephone base which is intersecting the lamp. The telephone base was just moved, yet its 'ghost' remains. It only shows up in shaded mode, not in wire frame as you can see. Ghosting is turned off and nothing is even animated in the scene. Nothing is frozen, I can't select this 'ghost', and it doesn't render. Although ultimately this isn't affecting my final outputs (stills), its a real pain when trying to move and place things in my scene. Any ideas? My only thoughts right now is that its something wrong with the new max 2012. I've never had this problem before. Thanks!

datacrasher, appreciate your help but ghosting was turned off and nothing in the scene is animated. Any other ideas?
7. Ive had this same question as well. MEGAPIXEL are you sure about the sampling? I use 3/6 DMC and still get the results J_FORR is describing. I usually just fix it in post.
8. I'm seeing an unusual problem in my viewport, does anyone know how to clear this out? I was working in this file (3ds max 2012, VRay 2.0), and decided to delete the geometry in it. However, after I deleted the geometry I am still getting 'ghosts' of it in my viewport. There are no objects listed in the lister, nothing is Xref'd, nothing frozen, no layers with objects on them, nothing. I can only see these objects when in shaded mode, if I switch to wireframe, looks as thou its a clean scene with nothing in it. This is extremely visually distracting. Anyone know how to clear this out? I have attached a screen shot. Thanks all! J

Upgrading to 2012

Dumb question. I purchased VRay 2.0 a few months back and have been using it with Max Design 2011. If I upgrade my subscription to Max Design 2012 will I have any problems with Vray??? Are there any steps I need to be aware of or will my transition be pretty seamless? Thanks in advance!

VRay Matte Issues

Hey to everyone that viewed this post and maybe is having the same question, I figured my problem out. I feel like an idiot but someone out there may have the same issue. Make sure your ground planes normals are facing the correct direction or that force 2 sided is on. I just shelled my ground to fix the issue but I guess Vray was "seeing" through my polygons and wasnt able to place the shadow matte on it correctly.

VRay Matte Issues

I'm sure there is something small here I'm missing but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. I am posting a simple scene in which I want to comp the chairs into the scene later, yet the subtle shadows aren't showing up in my comp. I rendered the chairs into the scene normally to make sure they did in fact exist and to show you the result I am looking for. Why are my shadows dissappearing when I comp the chairs in?? My process in going to the VRay props of the ground plane and turning on Matte/ -1/ etc. I've also tried using the VRWrapper material. I've checked and unchecked every combination I can think of here. Any ideas??
13. Everyone, thank you so much for the great ideas. Some I was able to take for this particular project and some I'm def. going to use in future images. I've attached the final 'look' I'm going with (there are about 11 more configurations of this workstation I have to render). Although everyone liked the darker background better, it was decided to use the white for printing purposes. Thanks again for making my first post on here a successful one and I'm sure you'll be hearing from me soon!!! James
14. Yeah I was just thinking it may be burning a bit much. Unfortunately the light fixture is recessed in that small little space (can you believe that!) I'll work on the displacement idea and reflections, thx a lot!
15. Thx Elevation, I'll give it a shot and see how it comes out. Very creative!
