  1. Gave up on FBX... Did .dwg export. Max is still kind of on it's knees and the machine I'm on has some pretty good horsepower. Hmm. Design is a done deal... File is not going to change in any way during my work to get this biatch rendered and looking pretty
  2. I came across this thread while trying to make sense of trying to get 3ds Max Design 2011 to play with a model from Revit Architecture 2011. I've been thrown into the fire with the task of taking a 110mb Revit model of a high rise building into Max for rendering and make it all look pretty. Really interested in advise on what to do / what to avoid. Not sure what you guys would call a large dataset. 110mb? I exported to FBX but from what I've read it sounds like that is a view-specific deal. Can I export to FBX, take into Max, and do camera matching, or should I be looking more at exporting to .dwg first?
  3. Anyone got a good asphalt shingle texture that tiles nicely? =) I've searched google images and have been outta the 3d game for a while so don't know all the quality sources for nice textures... Tnx M
  4. Yeah, have yet to work on the roof soffits. Added in the gutters, some downspouts, splashblocks, ... still some ways to go... and yeah, the sun is too high... I need to stick in a compass and fix that. Damn Hawaiian sun. Got to work on the roof some more.... and add in a few more elements. Lightscape. Used to model in Lightscape (it's possible but limited to what you can do)... but I was meaning modeling stuff in Autocad for LS. Time consuming to get nice results first time around. Getting the normals correct... Maybe post another update tomorrow depending if I get time to work on this some more.
  5. For me, the wood and the roofing don't cut it... It's getting there.. Missing gutters?.. Flashing is a good idea.. some of the smaller details that make it look REAL. downspouts? Also, the steps at the entrance go onto the grass.. Maybe put in a bit of conc. slab or paving to link those steps in with the drive? As for the drive... you're in the US maybe?... If so, you should have standard details dimensions from your local city for that stuff... right?... Just now it look like you drive off a curb... Definitely has potential to be a nice render... just needs some small things picked up IMHO.
  6. Ok, have done a bit more on my "lunchtime" house exterior project LOL... So far I've spent 3.5hrs to get this far. Not fast, but faster than I used to model stuff for Lightscape!
  7. Been a while since I've done any serious 3D other than simple massing models so decided to put Max 9 through it's paces and see how fast / good I can make an exterior render of a house. So far, 2.5hrs of work and a quick render. Some geometry problem with an extruded plane for the houses concrete slab, but not to worried about that just yet. Question: I plan to put vertical siding (1-1/2" x 3/4" thk @ 1" spacing) around the entire house... Typical construction for Hawaii. Do you guys think it's a good idea to just model these or use a bump map? Might be simpler to just model them.. right? Mike
  8. Thanks, that answers my question AND others that would probably have cropped up. Great tutorial!
  9. When you guys are modelling a house in 3dsmax (I'm using v9) what's your process? I'm putting together an exterior render... I don't care about modelling any of the interior.. Just the shell of the house. How would you guys create the walls? Create a spline for the entire border of the house, extrude to the window sill height, then to the head height, then to the plate height.. so that you can remove the area's where windows will be placed? Or... is there an alternate / better method?

  12. I wrote a thesis on a pretty similar subject back in 2003 while I finished my Architecture degree in the UK... "The effects of technology on the practice of architecture".
  13. Nice images... I like em! Getting pretty close to be PR IMHO.
  14. I'm trying to loft a shape along a path. Both the path and shape are editable splines. I select the shape, go to Compound Obj, select Loft... choose pick Path... but Max won't let me select the path! Have I missed a step? BTW - I can get a loft to work by using splines created in max, but im importing a fairly complicated spline created in Autocad 2005.
  15. It's awesome Nisus. I loaded it up a few days ago and it worked seamlessly with CadMonkey 2.5. However, I'm waiting for them to update the Banana plugin to get better sunlight - deeper shades of Yellow.
