I had this weird problem with the wood texture.
I adjust the UVW map modifier settings and the image looks fine in the modeling scene but as I render the result does not look the same. better say it doesn't change in render!
I had encountered the same problem while a go.
If the gamma setting is modified correctly, just save your image in .bmp format and then if necessary use photoshop to change it to JPG or whatever format you are looking for.
