  1. Hi, in my forum contact info there are links to several instant messaging profiles of mine from many years ago, which are no longer valid. But there doesnt seem to be any place anymore i can delete them from my profile. Anyone got a hint? Thanks!
  2. I agree GPU based pathtracers very likely will be the future. The big question is if they are the right thing today. First, working professionally with a GPU based renderer requires a significant investment in one or several high end graphic cards, which might get devalued very quickly by newer models. Second afaik all GPU renderers use pathtracing, which is supernice as long as you got well-lit objects, which is i.e. cars or product shots. For scenes where just part of the image can see direct light, which is architectural interiors, pathtracers tend to give you exactly what you see: noise that never really clears up. Aksel

  9. This might seem too obvious and i am sure everyone thought about this and did this - don't ever use IES lights *without* setting the falloff to inverse square as in the real world.
  10. I did not follow that Maxwell thing for quite some time now, but getting the e-mail i downloaded the v1 - at least i paid for it so i wanted to give it another try In fact i was surprised - i appreciate NL went away from that mainstream how 'the' rendering engine has to be today and introduced several pretty original concepts workflowwise imho. Hats off to that, after all the pressure they must be under, from users and as well maybe from their banks, this is couragous and a few ideas are really nice. But thats all details, one could probably work oneself into the materials in a few days. The thing is Maxwell is still deadly slow, at least too slow for the wishes and ideas my clients have. Might be nice if you use the engine to render smaller 'studio setups' for your next university assignment, but i would be curious if anyone if really able to use this in production (ps: no, don't show off these outdoor-examples - i want really nice and heavy duty indoor stuff rendered in less than 3 hrs.) Cheers, Aksel.
  11. The dummies on that page seem to be pretty old-fashioned, i meant the typical plastic female looking simplified mannequin like (no need for clothing). The problem with Poser is the models come out with too many features like 6-pack abs and supermuskular shoulders for me, and i dont find any (quick) way to solve that towards a simplified plastic dummy. I am not a good friend of Poser i have to add. So Poser6 model would be best - if anyone got a perfect one ready, i'll buy it
  12. hi, my client is driving me crazy - shop-project, and all shopwindow dummies/mannequins i proposed weren't what he was looking for. i looked around at digimation and turbosquid, and had several different gos with poser. so, if anyone has a pointer were to get models which look *as close* as possible to shopwindow common dummies, i'd be happy to know. if you have one you prepped for yourself one, please contact me if you would like to sell the model. thanks, aksel.
  13. ies lights, especially spots, tend to bring a lot of energy to a small area. in my experience there is no way to get the image straight than to use max exposure controls. i know... ouch. anyway, either that or render an exr and make sure you are experienced correcting that one. i still find pshop cs2 has not enough tools for correcting float, so i often use exposure control even if it hurts a little. but ok, the image you get is nice, and thats all that counts in the end. a. ps: oh, just saw you are asking vray specific - then try vray exposure controls, from what i saw they are superiour to what you find built in in max.
  14. hi andy, erco lights dont use any technology unusual to max, and that is photometric point lights and idroppable content. the idrop content including the ies-file is always put automatically into ...\3dsmax\downloads, so you might want to try and copy your files from there to another directory. to avoid that i keep my ies-data on a network drive and exchange the ies path in the light manually. you have to do that anyway, i.e. opening old project, reinstalled max, download-folder gone. hope that helps, aksel.
