1. err.. "now days it exists only to make money" Yep, and when you get the money, you can be an architect. Till then, you slave in some office (your own or someone else's). As in any other field of work you can simply see the obvious, some people are so good at their work that it becomes art, just as when you see a blacksmith make an iron rose in such detail you are amazed. But would you buy it or just tap the guy on his shoulder and say: damn good job m8... You have to make a name for yourself by slaving a lot, working so much you get the most famous "tattoo" in computer world: qwerty inprinted on your forehead cause you fell asleep on your keyboard. Then, when you have budget and have made a bit of a name for yourself, especially if you have an investor and a construction company behind you, you can do architecture. Bauhaus era is gone, there's no more thoughts on optimizing the space, making it more efficient and pleasant. Omg you saw Burge Al Arab. When in doubt, make it all of gold and you win. Or f/e google's office space. That's ridiculous, looks like a kindergarten and there's so much background noise you can't concentrate on anything. But they are "cool". Ok, Ok, i may have overdone it here with ctiticism, So here's a positive example: Ferrari's factory. I always kinda knew smth like that would be awesome, but to see it made, just BRILLIANT. Just imagine, a quiet environment, glass roof above your head, you're sitting ona bench among trees with a technician sipping coffee and discussing smth, a fountain behind you, while 5m from you 2 guys are assembling an engine and 10m right of you is a window so huge that the tree infront of it (inside) can grow for another 15 years without reaching the top of it. Or for example hufhaus, pre-built homes that can be assembled as lego within a week and they can be of any kind of design. Maybe that's the future, we have yet to see. Architecture is not dead, it's just in stasis. If you want education, GO FOR IT. But while you study, make sure when you get a degree you can start working immediately, while it's all fresh, keep track of all developments in area of interest and always try to expand your horizons. Make your own future and fortune
2. Just an addition to Juraj's post Changing the lense (expanding field of view) is the favored option just remember to use 20% wider "shots" and i'd suggest using photoshop (or any other software) for lense corrections so you get a nice "flat" images. To test this and see the proper settings, use a simple trick, make a room, a small one, 4X4m f/e and add just 2 pairs of columns, nothing else needed. 2 columns should be at left and right side of your cam view and the other 2 near the opposite wall. Render an image like this (20% bigger than what you need as an end result) and u use lense correction tools to correct the bending and leaning inwards effect and you'll see what i mean. Crop the image and that's it. Then just repeat with your real render. I also wouldn't worry so much about legal issues cause it's obvious that human field of view is greater than camera's and rooms tend to look smaller than they really are, if that's the issue here.
3. this is for all you Irish ppl out there
4. Ricardo is correct, i gave it some tests. Maximum scaling that worked was 1:2 and 2:1. That means, if you are using high values you may have viewport issues. F/E when making a wall that's 3X5m don't use meters or milimeters as units, use centimeters so you have 300X500 value, not 3X5 or 3000X5000 or w/e. Converting units from existing file won't work, better way is to make a new blank file and merge the old one. If using Vray ligts and Vraylightmtl be aware that light multiplier shouldn't go past 30 sometimes even 20 or you get "lightburn" effect. Next thing one should be aware is that there's a weird system Nitrous uses that's highly related to GPU and drivers, and in win7 you can add 3ds max to use Physx cause for another weird reason it's not listed. That helps. As far as the plugin goes, it was recommended to me by a friend that said, nothing impressive but viewport doesn't freeze anymore (he uses max 2012). Now, you mentioned something serious, and that's importing from autocad. That's why you see broken faces. That's the most common problem when importing from autocad, but there are 2 methods you may use. Unify normals and use cap holes. for flat surfaces use smooth then convert to mesh/poly, w/e your poison is. That'll fix viewport problems. I ALWAYS have that same issue when importing from autocad, no matter the format, fbx, dxf, dwg, even the f.. 3ds. Renders fine (when textured), looks like crap in viewport.
5. For closer trees use scattered 3D trees, for something far, use forest pack, saves a ton of rendering time. Also a nice feature for grass, since your project is a golf course is a plugin called grassomatic or something similar. Grassomatic can give you that wavy look of grass on the wind. You can also check out the Russian pack called iGrass, it'll give you some great ideas. If you want to use "follow-the-ball" effect, like from Legend of Bagger Vance movie, forest pack is your thing. Just remember to stretch the camera view option inside the plugin to values over 120% or you'll get a weird effect of shadows and trees disappearing before they completely get out of range of camera. here's an example (no shadows, no lights, grassomatic, forestpack, Vray)
6. Smth like this? As for the 2nd part, working on it. Nice challenge. O, btw, plz consider i'm a fan of fast rendering, so some quality issues may appear. If it takes longer than a few minutes, it's too long. 3ds Max 2010 64bit Vray render time 1min 57s Intel i3 8GB DDR3 RAM GTX 460 GLH 1GB DDR5 sata3 controller speedup done VrayRT and PhysX for preview custom improved with Marwing www.r-labs.net TY for advice and idea, I really appreciate all opinions and suggestions.
7. An exesrise in Vray with HDRi, a Pint of Guinness , hopefully realistic enough
8. Be aware that if you export uncompressed edited video with uncompressed audio converters crash, especially with custom video size. Avoid uncompressed audio if possible. Re-compress when converting.
9. Maybe someone is interested in Quest3D. It has real time rendering capabilities that are awesome but it's demanding, requires a lot of programming. Quest3D demo Inuyama Castle which is amazing is not downloadable from their website anymore but it can be found in other places.
10. Ahh, i see. Sometimes works when changing Nitrous rendering level (shading mode on/off) constantly so viewort would display correctly. Perhaps you can try PowerPreview script, but if using 32bit, avoid at all costs, causes crashes. Nitrous is bugged in a way that it doesn't agree with all hardware, mostly it's a driver issue. Latest isn't always the best (driver). I hope this helps.
11. I wouldn't recommend using 3DS Max for 3D printing (without converter), STL files are the best from MAX but require sooooo much correcting later. The main issue is modeling method itself. If you want to do 3D prints, you should use software that models solids. If you ever imported DWG or DXF to MAX you can get some idea about what i'm talking about (not solids but same errors appear). There are various methods of printing, and they all depend on size and accuracy of the printed object. And for printing itself, for small objects (you're from US so i'll use imperial system) like under 10" in size you get the best quality. Some printers are as accurate as 4 microns (1/66") but i don't think you want that of quality. Just to be sure, check their samples. I'd suggest this: 1. use software that creates solids, do your work there, STLs will work fine 2. If you still wish to use other software, like 3DS MAX, Autocad, Archicad, w/e... you can try CADspan or similar converting before printing. That way you'll avoid usual errors like hollow spaces, broken edges etc. As for printing company, you can visit a few that are close to you and check out their samples and get more detailed instructions (if needed).
12. Tried max 2012... meh.. Went back to 2010 64bit using D3D, lumion and VrayRT, to the world where everything worx. i3V2, 8GB RAM, GTX460GLH and no problems (xcept when Vray decides the entire scene should be pitch black cause of the default light multiplier but that's an easy fix)
13. Let's put false conscience aside. ALL great maters started with copying other people's work. It's not a matter if someone would copy someone else's work or not, get payed well or not.. It's a matter if one would take credit for it, or even cause damage to artist who's work is copied. When people make prints of Rembrandt and sell them, they make good money without causing damage to Rembrandt's legacy neither they claim it's their own work. I agree with Mr. Schroeder up to a point. Copying cans of campbell's soup can be art too... and pays well...
14. I have personally never been satisfied with smoke tutorials, smoke effects seen on various videos also caustic effects applied to objects that are behind other objects, like ice in a glass with fluid, so i decided to do something and share. Many people did amazing work, but like there was smth missing. Maybe this will help someone or give some ideas. I could have done FOV and a few more tweaks in post production but i'm a lazy ba$tard. Some settings are include in video. A tip: when making cigarette smoke, make it a bit transparent and add a bit of glow if you prefer, and avoid compositing transparent smoke using alpha, results are not as good.
