  1. Hi all, I'm trying to find out which visualization studio worked on the renderings (primarily interior views) for the proposed Northwestern University Biomedical Research proposal by Goettsch Partners and Ballinger in Chicago. http://blog.chicagoarchitecture.info/2013/11/07/northwestern-selects-five-big-names-to-replace-one-goldberg/ We have a client that really likes the look and feel and would like to use the same studio for their work. I don't have a contact at Goettsch so I'm hoping the viz community here might have some insight. Thanks, Jorge
  2. Ross, thanks for the offer. Will definitely look forward to that day!
  3. Thanks Ross. We're trying to sort that out with the sponsors of the competition. They're definitely moving forward with the overall winner of the competition, but they've express interest in building all top 3 designs. So we still have some followup work to do and keep our fingers crossed.
  4. Hello everyone, I just wanted to thank all of you who took the time to vote for our entry, your votes were very welcomed and I know they played a role in the final round of judging. As a result, my team's entry ended up winning 1st place for the wall type category and 2nd place overall... you can see the winning entries here as well as all 200+ entries too... http://www.freegreen.com/greensburg/ Thanks again! Jorge B
  5. You can see additional process renderings and the final hi-res images here.... http://asgvis.blogspot.com/2009/09/greener-greenburg-with-v-ray.html
  6. Thanks to all that have voted...keep them coming Ross, thanks a lot for your comments...I agree with you on the layout...I realized it would have been better to have a direct connection from the garage to the house without having to go around...still doesn't address the orientation....but just ran out of time... In regards to the pavers I think grass would be hard to maintain, but overall it would still help with drainage even if it was gravel in between the pavers. I'm curious myself on how the town will evolve and hope they make the right choices along the way. Thanks again for your vote and I'm glad you like the project. Brian, the brief for the competition did call out the fact that the town is obviously in tornado valley and we needed to provide shelter and one of the criteria for the project was endurance not just physcally, but also through generations. We addressed the tornado factor by providing a safe room along with "burying" the bedroom spaces below ground and burming around the house with the dirt that was excavated. We were given 3 wall types to choose from and we selected CMU blocks for the construction...thought that gave us more flexibility and strength.
  7. Hello everyone, I recently entered a competition to design an Eco-home for Greensburg, Kansas, which is a town that was devastated by a tornado about 2 years ago. The town is in the process of rebuilding itself as a sustainable community and environmentaly friendly town. I would like to ask you for your vote if you have a minute to spare. The link to my entry is below. Simply enter your e-mail address, submit your vote and then confirm the e-mail link that is sent to you. Very simple. http://www.freegreen.com/greensburg/plan-general.aspx?id=16 I will not be offended if you don't like my scheme and feel compelled to vote for a different scheme, but I would very much appreciate your vote. Model was created in Rhino and SketchUp and final was rendered using Vray for SU. As always feedback is welcomed on the images and presentation boards. Thanks, Jorge B
  8. John, haven't tried that one...seems a bit more capable than some of the free open source options out there, I'll test it out. Thanks.
  9. Recently we've been exploring Mind Mapping as a better way to organize thoughts and ideas and consequently a better way to do presentations. Problem is that most if not all mind mapping applications are very basic and sterile in the visual department. A person here in our office claims to have seen a mind mapping application that is fully customizable (colors, text, backgrounds, etc) to the caliber of say Adobe Illustrator and is also capable of creating Flash type presentations out of the box, capable of supporting images and video as well. I have not come accross anything like that and wanted to ask everyone two questions....one, have you encountered anything like what I described above as a single application that doesn't require knowledge of Flash or similar? Two, what is everyone using to push your presentation styles in new direction? Below is a link to an interactive mind map I found and the author makes the source code available, and it's the closest thing I've found to what we want to do, but this of course requires knowledge of xml and flash to start understanding how to customize this. http://www.rubenswieringa.com/blog/interactive-mindmap Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks, Jorge
  10. OMG this is way too funny...my daughter is totally into the Wiggles right now, she's 3. She was looking at the screen over my shoulder and she said "daddy look!!! new blue wiggles.... it looks funny!" Happy New Year!
  11. Link from the add works fine on my end. When I clicked on the ad it took me to your homepage right away. Using Safari.
  12. Hi Tom, Vray for Rhino is almost identical to Vray for Max. It uses the same types of vray lights, materials, sun/sky system, physical cameras, settings, etc.... There are a few things that aren't incorporated into VfR yet like vray proxies I believe and certain types of materials. You can download the Rhino trial and the VfR trial as well to check it out. I think to teach Vray only it'll be the same if you just use Max, but not sure if they're expecting to also learn how to apply materials, set up lights, etc.. For that you'll have to be a little familiar with the Rhino interface, but it's not very hard to do. I would recommend you look through the free PDF manual for VfR from ASGVIS website. It's a step by step manual, very thorough. Let me know if you have any questions. Jorge B.
  13. Have you tried re-loading the UI? I've had a similar problem from time to time and that fixes it for me. Go to Customize>Load Custom UI and find the .ui file, typically located under C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 9\ui Hope this helps.
  14. This is somewhat off topic, but still related to adsk educational licenses discusion. I teach 3D Viz at a local interior design college and one of my students pointed me to this link.... http://students5.autodesk.com/?tagent=autodesksite1006&lbon=1 ....it is adsk sponsored student community and the best part is they offer free educational licenses for some of the software. It doesn't include MAX but is does have VIZ 2007 and VIZ 2008 along with Revit and other adsk titles. All you need is a valid school e-mail adress and you can register as either a student or instructor. The license is good for 18 months. Not really sure if you can renew that after the 18 months. Seems like a good resource and if you're a student or instructor, you can't beat some free software, if nothing else, to try it out at least.
  15. I attended the design visualization portion of it only. (didn't stay for Games or Film/Postproduction) They showed the latest Autodesk demoreel and showed a video explaining how Max fits in the pipeline with Acad and Revit. It was simple, but for people just thinking about getting into arch. viz it seemed effective. I was there mostly to see the new features of Max 2008. The presentation was well put together and organized and they tried to show the main features of Max which included the new Scene Explorer and realtime shading w/ shadows in the viewport. The speaker showed an animation of a competition for affordable housing and that was the sample project used to explain some of the new tools. They also went through a quick list of fixes aimed at dwg and file linking models from Revit as well as showed how this latest version can handle very large polygon counts. Of course, the hardware was top notch, provided by dell, it was dual quad core, 8GB Ram and not sure the graphics card, but I'm sure it was top of the line NVDIA since they were one of the sponsors. They showed some new features of the selections and adaptive degradation. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff but that's pretty much the highlights. They showed only a little bit about MR, but nothing too new for me, since I use Vray for rendering. There was a good audience and it seemed pretty varied, from teachers to architects and arch viz artists. I got some brochures, some trial software and a t-shirt with Max and Maya logos on it. All in all it was good to see what's coming in 2008. Hope this helps. Jorge
