  2. I haven't had this issue before but now that Im in Vray 6 when applying caustics it changes the shadow angle considerably within the water. What am I missing here? Ive adjusted IOR just to see if something funky was going on there and it made no difference to the shadow line weather I set it to 5 or 1. Same results if I switch from Progressive (WIP) to Photon Mapping Single light source - Sun Photon Emit Radius is covering the entire scene.

  4. Maybe this will better explain what is going on. So many times there is either multiple buildings or once facade of the building is at an angle. And as you all know architecture Sketchup and even Revit models are not always the most clean (wink wink) and need things nudged and stretched a bit to fill small gaps etc. Or when I have it cleaned I want to apply a UVW to all the, say brick elements on one façade and adjust them all together. If that façade or entire building is not aligned to world view. Now matter how I adjust the pivots or create grids are reset the xform when multiple items are selected and a modifier is applied it will always default to world. In the attached videos I have just a section of a large facade. Both are the exact same section of facade. One is how it is imported into 3ds max at a slight angle and the other is that same section copied and rotated to align to world, and you can see how it behaves differently. I can apply a modifier to one object and it seems to work fine if I have aligned the pivots but if I select multiple or they are grouped the modifier defaults back to world alignment. The ideal in my head is these modifiers would apply locally or with the active grid even with multiple items or groups selected. But in my current setup they do not. If the building is square I can rotate the entire building to world (as you suggested) and make all adjustments and then place it back on the site but this is cumbersome and if the Architecture team changes something it doesn't just come back in and align because Ive moved the model. But the bigger issue is when one facade is at an angle I cant use these modifiers with out manually rotating and aligning each one and even when thats done they dont snap to the edges of the object as they do when its aligned to world.   6. Is there a way to rotate an building, Group or Pivot using a 3 point click system like most other 3d software in 3ds max. I attached a video from Sketchup showing what I want to be able to do. 3 click rotation.mp4
  7. Often I work with architecture projects from sketchup and Revit and they are not always on any sort of axis sometimes random degrees. Sometimes multiple buildings at all different angles on the site. I cant move and align them with the grid as I need to be able to bring in new parts of the buildings as the project progresses and I need it all to align with the original Revit or sketchup. Here in lies my problem. when I create custom grids for each building it allows me to move things and model with working pivots and grids on the grid axis but when I apply any sort of modifier or UVW it will align to the world axis even if I have it setting working or grid or local. So I have a few questions: 1. First an I just do a batch align of all local pivots to a working pivot? I can align them the object or world but not any way to batch align to a grid or working/custom pivot. So I usually use the align tool, select a face and then re center the pivots back to their objects. Is there a simpler way to do this? 2. Once pivots are aligned it doesn't seem to matter how I do it or what setting Im on when I apply a modifier, FFD, UVW whatever is, it sets it to world orientation. How do I set the world so that modifiers align with the new building axis. 3. or is there another way you deal with multiple models an different axis when dealing with modifiers.
  8. When I run on any file even a brand new file with a cube and one material placed on it it opens the command window as usual just for a split second and then Max disappears. If I am remoted into my workstation and run an archive it does the same but not only does Max disappear but it then logs me out and disconnects my remote session. The resulting file is, instead of the usual ZIP. a folder labeled (t$m$p$$$) that contains the max file and a .TXT file that lists all the resources and their paths in text. Has anyone had this issue. I was working in MAX 2021 and jumped to 2023 and now even an archive in 2021 no longer works and I've tried it on 3 machines in our office in both max version and cannot get a different result. I can run recourse collector and that seems to work with bitmaps but cannot archive proxies and xfref models and files like before. Any help with this would be a life saver.

  10. Color grading is not my strong suit and I don't use a very calculated approach and do a lot of adjusting until it "feels" right to me. I use curves a lot more than LUT's. As for the composition is feels a bit crowded. Here is a quick and dirty adjustment adding a bit of space and using a general rule of thirds making sure there is more breathing room in the quadrants. The tree on the left still seems a bit close to the cabin but it was hard to adjust in a flattened image.
  11. NIce work! That looks awesome! I would maybe move or remove the left tree it seems to crowd the image a bit, but otherwise a great improvement.
  12. Thanks so much for the comments. I am on another project for a bit and the client has sort of paused these so it will be a week or so until I'm back on them but I wanted to respond in the meantime. 1. too much sun on left wall - robe and cosmetics are bleached out - agree 2. night stand is too saturated - agree 3. looks good - 4. i find the dark stools depressing - I agree but this is what they have specified. Hopefully they change there mind after seeing the image. 5. this one is right on 6. outdoor furniture is fading away compared to interior - Agreed I'll see what I can do to give them more presents. maybe removing the sofa behind will help un muddy them. 7. i think fore ground needs flowers / shrubs - car too white! - I had some foreground but this vantage point is from the middle of an intersection and they didn't like that it wasn't accurate. I'll maybe try something with a vehicle in the foreground or maybe some crosswalk striping in the road. 8. left wall seems dull compared to right - wall picture seems tentative - frame and image - boots too big for jacket size - Now that you point out the boots to jackets its all I see. 9. crazy big bright image too distracting - That image is actually a giant custom wall size tv that they wanted to show the cubs baseball game. sigh. 10. needs foreground element - table edge? chair? - agreed 11. 2 items look arbitrary and isolated - hanging light would probably be off - agree unfortunately the hat and bags were specifically picked out and placed by the client in a round of comments. I'll probably remove for my own portfolio. 12. right on 13. liquor wall way too contrasty / saturated - agree I'll see what I can do. they sent me a ref image that looked just like that with a deep reflective coper backdrop. I tried to pop lights in there but it definitely still seems to dark and contrasty. Maybe the saturation as you mentioned is the key. Thanks again. Cheers.
  13. How are you creating the background? Is the exterior all in photoshop? I like the composition, smoke and the general color balancing the warm and cool tones. A few comments I have. 1. To my eye the forest looks out of scale and a bit blurry. 2. I would try to get something in the foreground a tree trunk or something similar to give a bit of depth and detail. 3. I would try to layer the forest background so you can create a bit of atmospheric depth. Lightening or darkening parts of the forest that are farther back. 4. Maybe add a tree closer to the structure that overlaps part of the building or window to make it feel nestled in the woods.
  14. Hey everyone thanks for taking the time to view my post. I am in the final rounds of review on a large set of images for a client. (the largest set I've ever done for one client) and looking to pick the brilliant minds at cgarchitect. I am constantly struggling in my images with color balance and color/mood overall as it pertains to a "set" of images. I would view it as one of my biggest weaknesses and things I get stuck on for way to long weather its balancing the color in cg with the lighting or within post. I tend to find myself liking a few images and disliking others and struggling to figure out if it is inherently the view and materials within that view or something that I could have done differently. Maybe its just self doubt and I've been staring at them for 2 months and I need to adjust. A quick description of the backstory for the images: - There are two condos that are close to identical and a hotel - The client had close control over the views and composition. So there isn't much wiggle room there, but there could be small tweaks. - Client also obviously has stipulated all materials and furniture and most of the accessories, art, lamps, books, number of books etc. but there is some wiggle room there possibly. - Views out the window were provided by a photographer from the actual site.
