  1. Where is that light hitting the wall above the door (near the ceiling) coming from? That art does not seem to go with such a clean and earthy space either. Looking great all in all. Oh, ditch the People magazine in the foreground...

Silly question...when using the CC plug-in do you have it installed on every render node? We have a 200+ machine farm and need to know if I need to write a script to install it on every node. Let me know. Thanks
  3. No need to get the sky perfect inside of MAX...just render to a .TGA (or other embedded alpha file type) and select the alpha channel in Photoshop. Now you can place any sky you want behind your image and tweak it to perfection.
  4. Hello Brian,

Most grateful if you can help.

We are linking Microstation produced dwgs into 3ds max 9.

All the settings appear to be correct as per the thread discussion (Kurt etc.) here on CGA.

We are frustrated with faceting on curved areas of models.

Would settings to address this be Microstation ones or the Max import settings. If either of these, which ones would they be?

    Thank you for your time.

  5. Hi Brian

I have been reading your posts on the Microstation & 3DS Max / Vray discussion and I am particularly interested in your established workflow.

I have experience using Microstation XM, 3DS MAX, and SketchUp with Vray individually but I am only just looking into your method of using 3DSMAX for rendering Microstation models.

Currently I am using a 30 day trial of 3DS MAX 2009 to get to grips with dynamically linking a MS model, applying materials, lighting and rendering etc - which is working really well and giving good results! However, the reason I am sending you this message is because I am having real difficulty 'reloading' MS models via the File Link Manager. Basically if I add/edit geometry in the linked MS model when I come to reload all my material assigmnents are lost even if I have 'Use Scene Material Defintions' & 'Use Scene Material Defintions on Reload' ticked!?

Have you encountered this before? I have spoken to Autodesk and they have said to Xref a scene with the linked file to get around this issue. However I cannot then apply materials to the Xref scene! I'd really appreciate any pointers if you have resolved this issue.

    Many thanks Brian

    Kind regards

Kurt, Bentley keeps this info pretty close to the vest. We have a large annual site license so I could not really tell you what a single seat would cost. I am guessing around 3K US probably. Don't you have MS already?
  7. A quick question for you guys... I am doing an interior scene and my camera is facing toward the glass entry system. The clear glass I am using looks great and has some very nice reflections on it. I want to render the scene and then comp in the exterior background in photoshop separately. The issue is that when I select the alpha channel in PS and delete it I am deleting the glass as well and thus I lose the reflections that were there. How do you go about using clear glass and still have the ability to comp in a layer behind it in photoshop?

Alwan, Very nice images for being pure MS. There is no argument that it is truly an amazing modeling tool, and a half way decent rendering one as well. The turning point for me was nothing more then the desire to be able to leverage the processing power of my entire office (185+ dual core machines) from my desk with a few clicks in BackBurner. That time savings alone is worth the 'hybrid" work flow we are using. The second, and equally as compelling, factor in using a two stage work flow was the amount of pre-modeled "stuff" that was available in the market place. Again, a HUGE time savings to be able to drop pre-textured, amazingly modeled, entourage into a scene and hit render. Finally, once you have a scene methodology dialed in (ie your typical exterior scene, and your typical interior scene), the speed at which you can get a new scene ready for the first set of test renders is astonishing. You can do the same thing in MS, but test renders always suffer because you have to turn off all of the advanced features that make an image look half way decent to save on rendering time. In our work flow (particularly with Vray) all of our test images are done with every possible feature turned on because the rendering process is so much quicker, and the farm can be fully leveraged. It has been awhile so I just thought I would chime in with a little diatribe... Cheers
  9. I am VERY biased as I learned MS in college and have been using it for almost 13+ years now. The newest build of MS XM is amazing, and very AutoCAD-ish. The speed and accuracy of it's solids modeling tools is truly unmatched. Some have said that MS is the LEXUS, AUDI, & INFINITY of the CADD world while AutoCAD remains the Toyota, VW, & Honda of the industry. Learn both...why not. Give XM a try and see what happens. As for rendering...definitely check out our thread on the MS section of CGA. You will want to take your DGN from MS and export it as a DWG in order to link it into MAX to render it (with Vray preferably).

Richard! Great to hear from you chap. Are you coming out to San Diego next week for the conference? If so, we must get together for a few pints my friend. Cheers

Still 100% MICROSTATION modeling! Will never switch. The solids modeling tools are just too powerful. I am also rendering 100% of my MS models with VRay in MAX...LOVE IT! The work flow is great and we have it dialed in perfectly after about 14 months of use.
  12. Ahhhhh....you too? We are now running MAX 9 SP2 and get the exact same error message on the assembly job for strip rendering. We have a 100+ machine farm and BB will keep reassigning the job all over the farm for sometimes hours, each time with that same "missing strip" error you mentioned. Usually it finally gets a machine that can do the job and its compiles...funny thing is, every machine is identical (insert U.F.O. noise here). I hate BB but I love it as well!
  13. Just wrapped up these images of a condo project and it's amenity deck. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks
  14. Well...sort of. You do discuss LWF as a tangent and describe various aspects of LWF. What we the community would love to see is someone of your expertise really digging in deep to the entire LWF process and showing the step by step process of setting up MAX and Vray properly and then ultimately achieving great results. This would include saving to float or 8 bit etc...covering all of the different ways to achieve LWF in a production environment. Basically expand what you began to touch on the Int. GI DVD. "If you make it, they will buy it" trust me, they will come in droves...
