  1. Thanks for the link. It worked out well- just changed a few things for final tweak (like omitting the noise & adding a self illuminated glowing edge wireframe to the material). I appreciate the help.
  2. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a house modeled and I need to texture it like the attached photo. I have been working with a combo of wireframe and self illuminated materials but not quite achieving the look. I also tried a few contour shaders and the effect wasn't quite right. I am rendering using Mental Ray. Thoughts?
  3. Most of my clients come from people I know, co-workers I have worked with previously who have moved on to different companies and by word of mouth. Some clients have found me online and called me. I have started cold calling and stopping by Architecture firms, and while I have received some call backs and interest, it hasn't been the most productive. I'm always looking for new methods to generate sales so if you have suggestions I'd love to hear them.
  4. Quick question regarding render farm set ups. We recently set up a render farm at my company. We have several 3ds Max users in house. The way we have it set up is that each user has his own workstation. Then we have a station with the master render farm computer which is of course hooked up to all of the slaves (which are housed in a different room). There is nothing on these computers but 3ds Max and the Backburner programs. Everything works and renders fine. However, every time we fire up 3ds Max on the Master Station we receive the Max Trial splash where it says we have x amount of days to register the product. The Master Station and subsequent slave computers had Max and Backburner installed from my original 3ds Max 2012 product discs (which is licensed and used on my main workstation). So, the question is this: Does the render farm need it's own license to work correctly? I was under the impression that the render farm could be set up with existing software and no additional licenses were needed. Our engineer thinks we need a license of Max for each one of the computers involved with the render farm. I am fairly certain this is wrong. But, I am wondering if I need to buy a separate license for the Master Station computer. I tried researching Autodesk and the Area - but frankly I can't find the answer that I am looking for because it is all forum driven (I miss human based customer service). So, I thought I would see if anyone out here has run into the same issue and had an answer. Thanks, Andrew
  5. Thanks guys! Those look like great options. I really appreciate the input.
  6. I am curious as to how everyone has their contracts handled in this digital age where clients and contractors don't always meet face to face? I always use a contract. If it is a larger job and I cannot meet face to face I always have the document filled out, sent, signed, scanned and sent back and copied for both parties. For smaller jobs where I can't meet face to face (jobs usually needing less than a day or two worth of work) I will send out the appropriate contract via email. In that email I state that if they agree to the terms that they can respond to that email saying they agree to the contract. I then print that and keep it in my records. Is this practice something that will come back to haunt me or would this hold up in court if necessary? What are some other methods to getting contracts approved digitally if someone does not have a fax machine (or don't want to use a fax machine) and I can't meet face to face with them? I look forward to your input. Thanks, Andrew
  7. Thanks! I'll give it a shot and keep you updated.
  8. Attached is the image of my settings and the results. The FG map was created incrementally at every 20 frames. The GI map is the same in both images. Thoughts?
  9. I realized I put this in the wrong forum earlier: I have been trying to render an animation and have been running into an issue I am hoping someone can help me with. I am rendering an interior animation with Mental Ray using FG and GI. The scene is lit with a daylight system and photometric can lights and finally mr Portal lights. First I calculated the GI and all is good. I calculated the GI photon map and switched to read only. Then I turned the photometric lights on and figured out the Final Gather solution and again...everything looked good...for the still render. I then incrementally added the FG points every 10 frames and saved the FG map. Then I turned on the mr portal lights and switched the renderer to read only for the FG map and when the first frame of the animation processed it had splotches that were not in the test renders. Any ideas? I wonder if I need to up the increments of my FG map? I did try every 20 frames and every 10 frames and had the same issue. I also tried ditching the mr portal lights, adding and dropping bounces to the FG --- and everything I try ends with splotches still that were not visible on the test render. Thanks for any help or suggestions you have! Andrew

  11. Anyone know of any good audio podcast that can be downloaded about the industry? Like to listen them when I drive and haven't found much so far.
  12. Quick question: Did you use a glow shader to achieve that light wrap effect or did you generate that in photoshop?
  13. Very nice images. I agree with making the railings and edges not too perfect (if you had to go back and do it again). One quick way would be to use your arch and design materials (if that is what you used) and to enable the rounded edges option) It just rounds off that sharp edges of straight objects without adding more geometry. Just an idea. Good work.
  14. Agreed. Probably could have spent more time in the diagnostics but I got pushed for time.
