Hi community, I've got a big project and a super short deadline. It's a hotel, with villas and a whole retail/eatery area. I was thinking of using the WParallax maps to save time for the interiors - just wanted to ask if anyone has used them before, and if they're happy with the results? And render times... I'm using 3ds max & Vray Thanks, Terri
  3. Interesting topic as I have been looking into this myself the past few months with the new options Vray are offering on this front. My brain is really not hardware wired, but I'm trying my best to discern differences, as I'm due an upgrade soonish and investing in a decent GPU driver is quite something. However, if it means that I can work 50% faster in terms of test rendering then I guess it will even out in the long run. What I don't like about GPU rendering so far (only Vray experience here) is that certain features that I use all the time aren't supported (Forest Color and Railclone Color maps being one of them), so you can't switch between CPU and GPU rendering easily...rather you have to set up a scene specifically for GPU which I find a bit of a hack. Has anyone tested Vray's hybrid rendering, and if so what are your thoughts?
  4. yeah I only used it for one month, but I was very happy with it. Seemed solid - I had no crashes or issues. And there are some cool new features. But like Brian I didn't push it too far - my max scene was 55MB...with quite a lot of plant objects and Forest Pack & Railclone, which it seemed to handle well.
  5. My experience with these programs is that there's always too much of a compromise on quality - I know my clients wouldn't be happy with the outcome. I did download the trial and gave it a bash...unfortunately it came out as expected
  6. yeah I don't always do clay renders, but these guys request it. If final render is 4000px, surely 40% of that is sufficient? ie. 1500px.
  7. Hello people, Would appreciate your input on the average resolution you provide clients with draft renders. My standard practice is this: 1_a clay render draft to approve camera angles (approx 1200px wide) 2_a first draft (1500px wide, sometimes 1200px) 3_a final draft (1500px wide) The final resolution of the images I am working on now is 4K, and client is wanting 2K drafts, which isn't possible in the timeframe given as renders are very heavy. Would appreciate knowing some of your workflows so I can know the industry standard before replying to them. Thanks as always!
  8. Hello dear cg community, I am in need of picking your brain. I have these glass fins I need to replicate in vray next (3ds max). The relief pattern on them is pretty prominent, and I would like to create a normal and displacement map for closeups instead of just a simple bump map. With the great new features inside Quixel Mixer I was hoping to use that - but it seems like there is no transform option for patterns on the latest version (besides a circular transform which doesn't help). I tried various filters in photoshop. No luck. Now I'm wondering if it's not best to deform some geometry in max itself and then bring that map into mixer to generate normals...seems long winded (https://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/frank-gehry-style-titanium-scales/) To be honest I'm a bit stumped. Anyone have any suggestions? Much appreciated, Terri
  9. Hi guys, I'd like to get your opinion out there - what is the best way to animate curtains very gently blowing in a breeze? I can't seem to find much online...what's there is about 10 years old and things change super quickly in this industry. I usually build my curtains in Marvelous Designer, which is great for stills, and which has it's own animation system, but once I bring these into Max that's where I'm stumped. My experience with Max simulations are limited...so I'm not sure if there's more than one way to do this? Bar from manual animation? My previous encounters with Max's Cloth make me want to steer well clear of it. Any suggestions? Thanks, Terri
  10. Stumbled apon this again after a year...script works a charm - thanks Hernan!
  11. Sorry Thomas, but I only saw this now. Here are some screenshots (the whole thing is too big so I tried zoom in two parts...hope you can make sense of it!):
  12. You can still purchase Maxtree without GrowFX - you just want be able to adjust the models. I have some VizPeople skies - also good but I prefer PG
  13. PG Skies all the way. I've heard good things about CG Source but haven't tried them. As for plants I'm all for procedural, so maxtree would be a first hand choice as you can then adjust them if you own GrowFX. I often find that plant libraries out there are either too basic, or too detailed that the tree practically crashes your system. I like to have control over that. If you don't own GFX then Evermotion models are generally good. Steer clear of CG Axis... their plants look fake. No offence to anyone.
  14. Ah yes of course. I remember doing that once by mistake and being so annoyed that my glass wasn't showing on my wire colour. Thanks for the reminder Corey...I have project deadline brain mush!
