Modeling neuro-like structure

Hi,

I'm having problem with some basic stuff, and maybe someone could help me out.

I need to model a neuron-like structure that looks like the one in the picture.

My idea was to use a sphere and stretch the vertices using soft selection, but I cannot achieve that smooth arc between 'arms' (I marked it in the picture).

How to do it in a simple way?

Maybe You could give me some hints.
