G'day...
I think having regional contacts with fellow 3D Artists is important, especially in today's market. The internet is great - it brings together people from all over the world so they can share ideas and information. However, it never hurts to be in touch with people that are geographically near each other. There's something to be said for having someone near you. You tend to have a lot of things in common since you grew up in the same environment. Plus there's always the possibility of having face-to-face get togethers with other nearby associates.
I've been contacting people in Australia that work in/with 3D trying to get a loose collection of people that can network via email. The response has been very positive, so much so that running it via e-mail is no longer efficient. I've polled the members and the consensus is to move it to a Yahoo! Group. This allows new members to view old posts, and gives us a place to store files for WIPs, tutorials, etc.
It's not to replace the AAAI or the CGA forum, rather it's an informal collection of Aussies who all like 3d. We can chew the fat, discuss technical subjects, offer C&C for members, etc.
If you have a project that you have a deadline for and want to see if anyone in the group can help, have a techie question, want some C&C on a WIP, or have any job leads that you aren't interested in? Then make a post to the group of local artists in your same area to get some assistance.
Your participation can be zero or it can be C&C of other's work. It can be as little or as much as you want.
In order to have regular communications, I intend to make regular posts to the members on a variety of topics. New tutorials that have been placed in the download section, WIP C&C requests, reviews of books and plug-ins - you name it.
If you're in Australia, feel free to check out the Yahoo! group, or PM me for more information.
