  5. Hi, I was wondering if there any free CAD program you can suggest that lets you see the attributes (properties) of objects or lines that are created in autocad? I've tried this link on autocad: http://www.autodesk.com/products/dwg/viewers but it doesn't let me view/see the attributes. The files I am viewing contains information on the attributes/properties and I would like to use a free CAD program to view them. Thank you.
  6. We all know about the unfortunate (to say the least) decision of Autodesk to abandon perpetual licenses of single products and sell only monthly or annual subscriptions. I''ve seen though online stores in my country selling perpetual (at least so they say) licenses or older versions of AutoCAD, say AutoCAD 2013 LT. I'm wondering if this is: 1. Possible 2. Legal It sure is tempting, but I'm wondering if it's some kind of scum or something...
  7. Help!! I have AutoCAD 2002. I worked on the project of 2 weeks. I kept on a flash card. After I pulled out from a computer, I showed to the customer. when again I tried to open houses, writes that the file of drawing is damaged. How to restore?
  8. Hi all, I am building a desktop - workstation for the first time, for my working purpose as an architect - So I am quite a noobie and I know nothing about OpenCL or OpenGL or the difference in different DirectX version. This desktop-workstation will be only use for Work purposes. ( I don't game ) List of Programs I will be using are : 1) Adobe CC - Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, etc 2) Autodesk - AutoCAD (Intense), Revit (Intense-used), 3DSMAX + Vray 3) SketchUp + Vray 4) Rhino + Vray 5) BIM I will be running Windows 8.1 pro 64bit So, my work goes like this - From Planning to 3D Modelling to Rendering. While on 3D Modelling and Rendering, it will take pretty long to time (especially Render) and the computer will be on for intensive rendering for a long time. This is the part list I have at the moment (incomplete) http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/rstq7P I need help from experience user, especially from those who work with workstation. Questions : 1) Comments on the pc parts that I had chosen. Is it recommended for my use? Or I should go with other parts? (Reason I go with 2011-v3 socket is that I read it is for enthusiast and I want something powerful enough, to not mess with the programs while I work. And I did not choose a Workstation motherboard because is too expensive and I don't think I need it yet) 2) Stuck with Graphic Cards. - So like I said, I am a noobie and did a lot of research on this build, but still can't decide on the GPU. I would prefer Nvidia GPU to be honest. So, I am stuck with GTX, Quadro or the hybrid Titan (that's what I read from lots of forums). So, which will suit my needs? I read somewhere that rendering uses CPU instead of GPU, I am not clear about that. I also read that getting mid-range GPU that have higher GB (Memory) will be better off than getting the highest end GPU like the GTX 980. So, which GPU should I go with that is well-worth the performance and money? And also Faster Rendering Time. One important thing is that, I am frustrated with laggy, slow computer. So, I want something that could run really smooth for me. I can't afford all the High-End parts unless it is necessary. I hope to get help from here. Hope to hear from you all. Thanks in advance for everyone's suggestions/opinion/comments. PS : 1) I have people recommend me to change i7 to Xeon, because it is mean for 24/7. But I am not sure yet. Need some more suggestions from experience user. 2) I also have people recommending me to go with Quadro because I used Autodesk a lot and is stressing the OpenGL (not sure with at OpenGL) mean. But at the same time, another recommend me to just go with GTX 970. So which one will be best to suit my needs ? Please Help.
  9. This is my first real build (did one in architecture school back in 2009 on a tight budget). My budget is really around $2k, this is closer to $2,400 (doable but gotta convince the wife first). I could drop the video card to a Geforce GTX 970 and save almost $200. Please let me know if you see any issues with this proposed build, I was hoping to purchase everything over black Friday, but I have now realized I don't know as much as I should about custom builds. The main software I will be using is: 3DS Max, Revit, Sketchup, Photoshop and AutoCAD. Probably no gaming, but the wife will probably use some video editing software to make home movies and digital scrapbooking. Anyway, I appreciate any feedback you might have. 10. A .DWG file was corrupted upon the unexpected switch off my PC. I used to restore my AutoCAD file by using the commands RECOVER, RECOVERALL, AUDIT; but these commands didn’t help any with the file in question. How can I attempt to repair it?
  11. Hi all! Having a bit of trouble with something I thought would be basic in CAD! I'm going to do some freelance visualisation work and the architects have supplied me with plans (PDF and DWG), some elevations are at a scale 1:200@A1 others are 1:100/1:75/1:50 etc. How do I convert or scale these drawings back to true size 1:1 so I can take the splines over to 3DS Max to speedup my workflow? Am I missing something simple here? I tried selecting and scaling x75/x50/x100 etc but nothing matches up with the dimensions given! Fairly advanced with the workflows of Max and Maya as an animation graduate but new to AutoCAD! Any help would be immensely appreciated Kind regards, Andy
  12. Hi.. i am architecture student from Malaysia.. ive plan to build a computer to do my works. Just want to know if my system are good for my architecture works? Im just not sure for the GPU. I have around usd450 for the GPU. (Sorry for my very bad english)
  13. Hi everyone, Whether it's archviz or studio projects in school, my usual workflow is to use SketchUp for massing studies and final renders (coupled with VRay) and AutoCAD for 2D project documentation. While for simple archviz this has sufficed so far, I have quite a hard time keeping the 2D and 3D work in sync when I come up with a revision to the building mass during the design process at school. Therefore I was thinking of switching to Revit. Since it has included the Vasari tools, I assume it should be possible to do informed massing studies quite quickly, and keep the documentation always in sync; with the final rendering done in 3DSMax, for example. What are your thoughts on this? Has anyone done a similar workflow switch, or the other way round? What was it like? What tutorials/books did you use? Thanks for any answer.
  14. Hi, I thought I had this covered already because a few months ago I found a site with a bunch of tutorial PDFs which showed how to create a building from autocad files or from schematic plans etc. I think it was VisMasters but they don't seem to be around anymore? Anyone know of the tutorials I'm talking about OR (emphasise: OR) other tutorials that would guide me through working from plans. Thanks!
  15. We are working on a 100,000 sq ft library in my office and are trying to optimize our workflow in AutoCAD 2011 and come up with effective ways to share our building models with our engineers, contractors, and client. I feel like the traditional way of showing black and white 2D drawings printed from AutoCAD has become somewhat superfluous with today's technology so we are trying to use the tools available to us to produce some kind of 3D model in which building and parts information can be embedded into the actual file. For example, my contractor clicks on a floor slab and it displays square footage, thickness, type, materials... I know it's possible to do this by publishing to DWF in AutoCAD so that the model can be opened by anyone (who has software to open DWFs) and be able to click on a beam or column for example and see what size it is or other information we choose to be displayed. Has anyone tried this method with success? It seems like a lot of work when dealing with a building of this size. I made a 3D PDF with pretty good success using our AutoCAD model which by the way is drawn using ADT which means everything we draw is a 3-dimensional object. I imported the CAD model into Sketchup and used a trial software to convert to a 3D PDF which is viewable by anyone. This is very practical for everyone involved in the project to be able to see a 3D structural model and rotate around and so on. The layers that were made in Sketchup can be turned on/off (if you know where to look in adobe reader). I would love to share with you the 3D PDF so you can see as a reference but I don't know how to attach it to this post. I was wondering if anyone is dealing with these issues and what solution they have found for it. Thanks!
  16. Hello All! I have just joined the community and I am looking forward to being part of the community. I am a British Chartered Architectural Technologist with over 20 years experience in the UK construction industry, now working freelance and pushing out into the realms of Architectural visualisation. I currently use AutoCAD / SketchUp Pro for 3D modelling and Vue Studio and Lumen RT for creating architectural visuals. I am also dabbling in CG visuals outside the realm of architecture and am looking forward to adding "Mudbox" and "Showcase" from the recently acquired Autodesk Design Suite to the workflow. I have a reasonable set of tools at my disposal …I just need the commissions now. =)

  19. Hi Is there a way to optimize polylines and ellipses from Autocad before importing in 3DS Max? They generate an enormous amount of vertices in my scene. I have 1.475.000 and most of them are just junk from those two type of elements (instead of 2-3 vertices I have hundreds per element). If I want to redraw them in Max it will take a lot of time and some surprise crashes.
  20. Hy, I'm using AutoCAD Architecture 2011 for the first time and I have a problem. How can I see a window that is positioned on the wall higher than standard horizontal section line. For example, a 400x800mm window, situated at a height of 1600mm, is not seen in the floor plan, just in 3d. What can I do because I want to see it when I print that floor plan. Thanks!
  21. Hello all... I am trying to get a handle on exteriors of houses for modelling in 3ds. I have AutoCAD 2006 and even that freebie program from AutoDesk that converts higher versions of Cad files down so I can read them (TrueView?). I found a company in the UK that has a bunch of house plans on a CD for pretty cheap. Thing is, their example is a DWF format. I can view the example file in AutoDesk Design Review but cannot export/convert it to a dwg. I fire up AutoCAD 2006 and cannot seem to do anything with the dxf file. I've even tried to 'cheat' and just drag-n-drop the file onto my open AutoCAD. It just sits there as a red icon... My knowledge of AutoCAD is very limited. I can muck around with the Layer Manager, make poly lines, snap, ortho, etc. Just the basics really to clean up an existing autocad file and get it ready for bringing into 3ds. I'm sure I'm overlooking something. I did a search of the forum for DWF but nothing turned up for what I was looking for. Maybe it's too noobish a question...? Thanking you...
  22. Hello... I've been trying to work out how to make a 3D model in 3DS, if I'm given the floor plans and elevations of a building (let's assume a 2-storey house). I have AutoCAD 2006 and Max 2008. I've been trying to: 1) in AutoCAD trace the walls from the TOP view 2) in AutoCAD trace the side views from FRONT/LEFT/etc view 3) bring the splines into 3DS using File -> File Link Manager 4) I've tried and tried to connect the corner verts and the move the floor plans to the proper height but it just isn't working I feel it requires the side views have perfect alignment (which isn't difficult, just time consuming). I think what's throwing me off are the views of the angled roof - it's "confusing" me. I'd like to perfect a work flow for both situations (with and without an AutoCAD file handed to me from the home builder or Architect - without would be hard copy). Can someone point out where I'm going wrong and offer some tips please? Thanking you...
