  1. Hi Guys, I ve ran into a situation with one of my scenes where it is taking ages to render in Mental ray (studio max 2014). The render size is 600x600 with draft render settings everything set to low in the render window settings. I then looked into my CPU usage and noticed that it fluctuates between 2% and 40% and never reaches 100%. I will normally leave to pc to do its own thing without interruption. usually it hangs round 10-20% for most of the time. I have enable Multi-threading, set the 3D Max to highest priority in process tab and affinity is on all CPUs. I noticed with another scene the CPU will only reaches 100% usage when the render is nearly complete. Also pre render tasks for these scenes will take longer than usual calculating. I have exhausted my search for an answer, please help. If I have left vital information out please let me know and I will post it. PC specs are: 2 CPUs - Xeon E5620 @2.40GHz = 16 threads Qaudro 4000 24 GB RAM SSD 250 GB AND 2x 1TB HDD
  2. Hello people I'm here in a huge dilemma and i hope someone can help me out. I'm about to make an upgrade in my PC (it's already 6 yrs old) because the rendering times are becoming hazardous for my projects timeline. I saw the new Ryzen 3900x as a nice catch for this new rig, since rendering benefits for it's high core count and good clock speeds, but now it's out of stock and without any prediction of when the supply will normalize. Then i look the other way and see the i9 9900k with a lower core count but faster clocks, with plenty of availability everywhere. I ask, will i regret investing in the i9 setup now, other than waiting a little longer for the 3900x?
  3. I'm building a PC which will use Vray as a plugin to Rhino to render still images. I would like to know if I should spend my money on the CPU or the GPU for the fastest rendering times. Any recommendations welcome, but I mainly need to know if the rendering process is carried out by the CPU or GPU (or both). Cheers
  4. Im planning on putting together a pc with a Ryzen cpu, but I am a bit worried. Will it really perform as good as an Intel? I know it performs well in games, and it has more cores/threads but! Is it really good for rendering, texturing (constant interactive rendering in Max and Corona)? I'd like to hear opinions of people who use it or who switched from intel. Money is not the problem, if the Intel is better or more stable, I'm going for that even if it's double the price. I'm intrested in your opinions as well. Thank you!
  5. Im interested in your experiences and/or opinions with the new AMD cpus. What do you think about the performance, benchmark scores? Do you plan on trying/using them?
  6. Hello all, So ive been doing Archviz for a little while now but nothing mainstream, I have just landed a large contract with a business and am in need of speeding up my workflow render times. Now by reading around a lot of people are comparing GPU vs CPU rendering. The downfall of GPU is not everything works with it. Such as plugins, materials ect. But the upside its very fast for finding what your scene will look like on a rough scale. Another thing is cost, I have two 1080's and i7 the two 1080's cost me $2400. Now on load the heat they produce is crazy. I even have them on water and it still heats up my office. So with that I went and got a few servers both have 12 cores 24 threads 64gig ram with another one on the way at 40 cores 80 threads. All up cost less than $4600. My current servers produce 350watts each on load While my main PC the GTX 1080 uses 180watts on load for each card. So power really is not an issue. But anyway my question is, is it better getting CPU for render farms or GPUs. Yet I can get great deals on servers with lots of cores. For $2400 I could of got another 20 core system with 64gig of ram. But a lot of people are saying CPU's are dieing out for rendering. What do you guys think?
  7. Dear All, This is my first post, and Thank you for having me here. I'm an IT, and i have a project to build. I need to build for my client 5 Modeling and Rendering workstation. the model they are working on now are the HP xw8600. We are going to offer him the HP Z840 or the Lenovo P910 or the Lenovo P900. His budget is 4000$ per machine. They do Large scenes 3dmax and Vray. Kindly find below my questions: 1. which machine is the most silent one ? HP Z or Lenovo P 2. we go with one : Intel Xeon E5‐2620 v4 – 8 Cores, 2.1 GHz, 8.0 QPI, 20MB Cache, DDR4‐2133 , Turbo, HT, 85W 3. or we go with Two: Intel Xeon E5‐2623 v4 – 4 Cores, 2.6 GHz, 8.0 QPI, 10MB Cache, DDR4‐2133 , Turbo, HT, 85W Thank you for your help Sami
  8. Hi I made a post a few days ago but for some reason I can't reply to it so I'll start a new one. I am a recently qualified architect and I am wanting to invest some money into upgrading my computer. It will be my personal computer and I will be using it in my free time to teach myself more advanced techniques using vray with sketchup/3ds max. I bought a pre build system because I was in uni and I didn’t have the knowledge or time to invest in building my own rig. This has been fine for simple interior renders for uni but I want to create more lush and occupied interiors and exteriors. Here are the specs; Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 motherboard AMD FX™-6350 Six-Core Processor, 3900 Mhz, 3 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s) AMD Radeon ™ R9 200 Series 2gb gddr5 graphics card 32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 803MHz ram Raijintek Aidos cooler Coolermaster 500w PSU If there’s anything which stands out let me know. Thanks
  9. I am a recent architecture graduate and I am interested in making renders a big part of my work. I have a personal computer but I feel like it could need upgraded and I am willing to invest roughly €1,000. I bought a pre build system because I was in uni and I didn’t have the knowledge or time to invest in building my own rig. This was good for simple interior renders with vray and sketchup but I want to use it for more complex and lush environments. Here are the specs; Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 motherboard AMD FX™-6350 Six-Core Processor, 3900 Mhz, 3 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s) AMD Radeon ™ R9 200 Series 2gb gddr5 graphics card 32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 803MHz ram Raijintek Aidos cooler Coolermaster 500w PSU If there’s anything which stands out let me know. 10. I'm looking into a new single processor build. I noticed a big PRICE difference between the i7 5960X and i7 5820K. ($1500AUD vs $500AUD) It will be used as a workstation and then put to use in the render farm but possibly has potential for a good multiple GPU's renderer as the industry makes a shift. I see the Max # of PCI Express Lanes on intelArk for the CPU's is 40 vs 28 respectively. Does this mean I'm limiting the number of GPU's I can use in SLI configuration and would this mean the max GPU's I could use then are 3 ?? ( assuming GTX 980 are being used) Any thoughts? Has anyone run into any other limitations with an overclocked 5820K in a workstation? and should I be looking at a different build? Build cost is $3500AUD ($2570 USD), 64GB RAM, ASUS X99-Deluxe/U3.1, SSD, 1000WPSU, NZXT Kraken H61. Thanks
  11. Good morning everyone, I am sure there are people around having the same issue as me. I have noticed in a recent project that vray uses 100% CPU power when doing a rendering with override material enabled. However, when the render with the same settings is run, the CPU consumption oscillates between 40 and 60%, never reaching 100% during any part of the rendering process. It actually seems to me the speed is related with the materials. I await for your comments and I hope any of you helps to solve this problem and optimize the use of my resources.
  12. I'm not sure if this is the proper place to ask this but here goes nothing. I have just built a new PC and when rendering using V-Ray in Rhino it is significantly slower than my old PC... Which doesn't make sense since the new PC spec wise is better in every way. Specs: AMD (Old PC) Processor: AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 8-Core 3.6GHz Socket AM3+ Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5 OS: Windows 7 Intel (New PC) Processor: Intel Core i7-4790K Devil’s Canyon Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150 (Hyperthreaded) Memory: G.SKILL TridentX Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 Video Card: MSI GAMING GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 OS: Windows 8.1 The AMD processor will render using 100% of the cpu. My test rendering finished ~8 min. The Intel processor only uses ~20% of the CPU and finished in ~30 min. I've posted a link to an album with all of my V-Ray settings shown. Both PC's are running V-Ray Version 2.00.02. I have a feeling that my V-Ray settings are optimized for my AMD processor and not my new Intel. Could anyone help me tweak the settings in order to see a boost in performance from the Intel processor? Thanks! 13. Good Afternoon All! I have a question for you, my fellow professionals. I realise that this group is a place for us to showcase our work, but my question is slightly off topic as it regards the hardware that you use. I’m looking to build a new PC that can cope with very high polygon counts in SketchUp and also be able to render using VRay 2.0. I have an approximate budget of £1100 ($1650 or €1550). Whilst researching potential components; I found that there were plenty of gamers that suggest one part or another, but us SketchUp/3DS/VRay modellers/renderers are somewhat of a rarer breed, with different needs from our PCs and this is why I value your opinions so highly! My intentions are to go for an Intel i7-5930k processor (to take advantage of their Hyperthreading technology), does anybody use this and/or recommend an equivalent CPU that is of better value? In terms of RAM, I have been told to not look for anything less than 16gb. For a final render, what sort of RAM usages do you tend to achieve? Many thanks to you all and apologies for the long post! Dan
  14. Hi guys, I've been using 3Ds Max with VRay for a few years now, but only on a standard PC. I'm in the process of buying a new workstation, I have all the components I wish to buy but have come unstuck on the GPU. I am unsure how the GPU affects render times - I'm currently utilising VRay with the CPU only on long render runs - Up to 48 hours rendering vehicle/character animations. Can I impact these render runs with the GPU or shall I stick to pure CPU power or can I combine the two together.? If I can use the CPU & GPU in unison would investing in a Quadro card such as the k4000 yield any improvement over say a GTX 780.? I'm essentially asking two questions - 1. Is it beneficial to use the GPU & CPU together when rendering or simply the CPU.? If so how can this be done.? 2. If using the GPU to render long animation scenes does a Quadro card have a better impact than a GTX.? Thanks for any answers.! : )
  15. I have a question. I have Asus GTX 660TI OC 2GB i7 3820 16GB DDR3 Ram SSD 120 Samsung and another 500gb HD. I am looking to improve my machine. And there are 2 things on my mind . 1st Change graphic card. I was thinking about buying ATI FirePro v5900 or Quadro K2000 but while reading posts I saw you praise the GTX 780. 2nd Change my CPU 3820 for 4930k. I am using Vray and CPU rendering, only thing i need graphic card is for viewport performance. I need help in choosing one of this options. Criteria is time spent on modeling scenes opposed to waiting for render to come to an end. THX
  16. Hello Everyone, I recently came across a situation while using VRAY 1.5. When rendering files sized 1gb+ on machine: Ram:12gb, CPU - i7, 322ghz It slows down like anything. 10 hours to reach 1/4th of prepass 3 of 3. Observation: High Disk I/O, reading and writing 3ds max temp files, Low CPU Usage(only 1-10%), High Memory(95%) This makes the render times go upto 10h where as on render servers with 32gb ram and 16core CPU, it renders in 1h. Looking at the computer specifications, A guess of rendering time on server vs machine would be a straight double. But this is 10 times high! What would possibly be the reason for such slow down? Thanks in advance.
  17. I currently have two workdstations: 1) HP Xeon E5440@2.83Ghz (2x Duo Core, 8 threads), 4GB RAM (Window Experience Index 5.9) 2) Dell Xeon E5630@2.53Ghz (2x Quad Core, 16 threads), 12GB RAM, SSD running at SATA2 (WEI 7.1) I am rendering the exact same scene with VRAY 2.3 in Maya 2013. The scene use the same irradiance map and light cache map saved locally in the machine. The VRAY settings on both machine is the same except the dynamic memory limits are set to 3000 (for HP) and 10000 (for Dell). Max render threads are set to 0 (use all threads available). Which machine do you think it will render faster? Most people would think Dell should kick HP ass, but in fact HP render about 11% faster. Render result: 1) 7m8.4s 2) 8m4.9s What am I missing here? Does the CPU Ghz play such an important role? or in general, HP is a better machine than Dell? The Dell machine is much newer than the HP one. I just don't understand why HP is faster than Dell with 4 less cores .. :banghead:
  18. Hello, I am new to this forum, although i am following the work posted and the tutorials here for quite some time, and i have to say that its a great effort and it has helped me on many occasions. I have a recent problem with one machine at the office were i work. I am an architect and i work at an architectural firm, i am the visual artist of the office and i have quite some years of experiense. I mainly use 4 of our computers which are quite high-end, with distributed rendering. Two of them are actually almost identical in specs. The computrer i am using is an Intel core i7 -3820 CPU @ 3.60 GHz with 40GB of RAM and a graphics card of Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 2 Gb The computer that i call as almost identical is the same only instead of 40 GB of RAM it has 24 GB. The past few days i noticed a drop in the Windows Experiense Index, mainly the number of CPU calculations droped from 7.7 to 6. I started running some tests, tried to update drivers, update BIOS, to a reset on BIOS and i fortmated the computer. After many efforts on the matter the WEI came back to 7.7 from 6. But then i ran some render tests with these two computers. One two IDENTICAL scenes, with identical settings (checked thoroughly) the one computer is rendering the scene on 2 minutes while the other at 5.25. Now this difference is quite noticiable, if you think what will happen if i render i final project scene that would normaly need 10-15 hours the difference then would be too great. Just to make clear, all the files are loeaded localy in each test, there is no distributed rendering involved, and the machines have exactly the same plugins loaded cause i need to have them identical to use them for distributed rendering on other occasions. I send the computer to the manufacturer to check the CPU but they told me it works fine to all the stress tests (such as prime95). I loaded cpu-z and CPU meter and monitored the usage during rendering and it seems to clock normaly @ 3.60 ghz with 100% speed at all times. Can someone please suggest something, cause i am running out of ideas. Thank you very much Michael
  19. Is it really worth buying the i7? The FX 8350 is faster when we look at the numbers and costs half compared to the i7 4770. I saw many people on the internet talking about the 4770 (or 4xxx) processors, but I think the FX 8350 is just as good as some i7 CPUs, but costs less. FX 8350 has 32ghz in total while the i7 4770 has "only" 27.2ghz. What is your opinion?
  20. Do you think it's worth buying a dual socket motherboard and two opteron processors or a 6 core i7, a water cooler and overclock it a bit?
