  1. I´ve been looking for a Graphics Card for VRay GPU rendering, lately. During my research I stumbled across an interesting Benchmark result on the Chaos website: There are 3080 ti`s with 12287 MB of VRAM and others with 12288 MB, with a performance difference of nearly 10 percent and it has been proven by more than 200 GPUs...!!! Does anyone know how to tell the one´s from the others / how to find out how much VRAM exactly a Graphics Card has?
  2. I'm building a PC which will use Vray as a plugin to Rhino to render still images. I would like to know if I should spend my money on the CPU or the GPU for the fastest rendering times. Any recommendations welcome, but I mainly need to know if the rendering process is carried out by the CPU or GPU (or both). Cheers
  3. Hi, Looking for some advise if anyone has the time on a the specs of a new GPU */ 3ds max-Vray RT render node. I am wanting to build a machine with 4 x 1080ti cards, and*I have a few question if anyone wants to chime in much appreciated -What impact does the CPU have on a GPU rendering machine - ie can I basically pick the cheapest intel i7 I can find? -Motherboard specs? I see in some of the commercially pre built systems from various vendors they seem to use workstation motherboards and xeons, (at greater expense) is there any reason for this over say a gaming atx baord with 4 card slots? -What impact does RAM have...? -Power supply, I am assuming a 1500W would be required.* -Of the cards available, anyone recommend a particular brand? Does a factory overclocked card offer a significant performance increase? Here's my initial spec based on my assumptions above...which may or may not be reasonable!* https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rYFdTH Intel - Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor Corsair - H60 54.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler*Asus - SABERTOOTH X99 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard Crucial - 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory Samsung - 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB Gaming OC 11G Video Card (2-Way SLI) x 2 (will become 4 eventually) NZXT - Phantom 820 (Black) ATX Full Tower Case Corsair - AX1500i 1500W 80+ Titanium Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply Total:** *$2884.80 USD * * * * * Thoughts? 4. Hi all, First time here. I'm a newbie vray for rhino user looking for a gpu upgrade within a 200-250€ range. I've heard some good things about the AMD gpu RX 580 because of its price-performance. Would it be better to take an nvidia card for CUDA? would be vray compatible with the rx 580? Should i go for it? Thaks
  5. Hello guys, I have a GPU rendering based PC and i found an limitation. If I try two simply mirrors and Light between them to achieve something like "infinity mirror" i will get only 3 reflections through GPU, I tried to found something like reflection subdivs, but in CUDA mode i cannot check to use local subdivs, is there another way to increase number of reflections? If i tried to render same scene in CPU (it is not solving my problem, in the real case it will take too much render time, as I said i need GPU (CUDA)), the reflection is real. Bellow you can see what I mean: http://imgur.com/qkKSHtm - Scene http://imgur.com/N39oBr1 - GPU http://imgur.com/agLrj1V - CPU Thanks for your future help, Michael
  6. Hi all, I've just created a group that you may be interested in. Your membership will be most welcome. I'm hoping to get some knowledgeable contributors. The idea is to help more CG artists navigate the practical challenges of moving from CPU over to GPU, and once there, to keep up to speed with the technology available. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1797500417129685/
  7. Hi I made a post a few days ago but for some reason I can't reply to it so I'll start a new one. I am a recently qualified architect and I am wanting to invest some money into upgrading my computer. It will be my personal computer and I will be using it in my free time to teach myself more advanced techniques using vray with sketchup/3ds max. I bought a pre build system because I was in uni and I didn’t have the knowledge or time to invest in building my own rig. This has been fine for simple interior renders for uni but I want to create more lush and occupied interiors and exteriors. Here are the specs; Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 motherboard AMD FX™-6350 Six-Core Processor, 3900 Mhz, 3 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s) AMD Radeon ™ R9 200 Series 2gb gddr5 graphics card 32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 803MHz ram Raijintek Aidos cooler Coolermaster 500w PSU If there’s anything which stands out let me know. Thanks
  8. I am a recent architecture graduate and I am interested in making renders a big part of my work. I have a personal computer but I feel like it could need upgraded and I am willing to invest roughly €1,000. I bought a pre build system because I was in uni and I didn’t have the knowledge or time to invest in building my own rig. This was good for simple interior renders with vray and sketchup but I want to use it for more complex and lush environments. 9. Hi all! Apologies in advance - lengthy post as I've tried to do as much research as humanly possible before seeking and third party advice. We built a Vray RT - GPU orientated workstation a few months back (Thanks Dimitris for the helpful advice) & after a few teething issues all has been going great. We have now utilized all of the available space in our build with 3 Titan X's & due to increased workflow we really need to double that GPU render power (3 more sc Titan X's due to the 12gb - will expect to replace these once a pascal alternative is available, from what I understand the 1080 doesn't utilize nvlink so I don't think that's a viable option). I've been researching on various forums the most cost effective solution and so far I've come up with the following options: 1. PCIe risers / splitters (best option appears to be http://amfeltec.com/products/flexible-x4-pci-express-4-way-splitter-gpu-oriented/ £300): These look like the cheapest & most scale-able route to go down, however I'm learning that we may be capped by the number of gpu's that windows can handle (We're currently running windows 8.1) am I right in thinking that we could in all essence get up to 8 titan X's been utilized by one workstation? 2. PCIe Expanders / enclosures (Netstor, Cubix, Amfeltec etc avg £2k before gpu's) - these seem like an expensive option to say that the above is in all essence the same thing (- the housing & fans) & the fact that we could build our workstation again for the equivalent cost if not less (- the Titans of course), also wouldn't the same windows GPU limitations apply here? 3. Workstation tear-down & rebuild with further expansion in mind (£?) - no idea where to start here, any recommendations would be hugely appreciated if you feel this is the route you would take. 4. Additional / identical workstation (shopping list comes to £1700 before GPU's) - this is obviously the easiest option for me as we've already built the one here and know the pitfalls that come with the current config - however I expect that this could be another can of worms in terms of getting dr running for both animations & stills, not to mention file sharing, network latency issues etc etc (I've never messed about with DR in a production environment & I currently have all assets saved on secondary local hardrive with cloud backup) 5. GPU render node (£?) - no idea where to start here, any recommendations would be hugely appreciated if you feel this is the route you would take. Additional notes that I have taken down from various sources - hopefully you can help me sort out the chaff: 1. PCie lanes(?) 16x 8x etc don't have a detrimental impact on Vray RT rendering speed, however ray bundle size & rays per pixel will need adjusting in order to maximise efficiency. 2. One titan X counts as 2 gpu's under windows environment - device manager tells me different? 3. Windows limits the number of available GPU's to 8 4. GTX 1080 doesn't utilize nvlink so it's memory won't be stack-able. 5. 40 lane CPU (specifically 5960x in our case) will be able to serve all available gpu's 6. Each Titan X needs at minimum 250w of available power supply. Main goals: Stable - scalable - cost effective (I know the Titan X's can be costly but there doesn't seem to be a cheaper option available that fits our needs right now.) Our current workstation build is as follows: Corsair Obsidian 750D (we were in in the fractal R5 but the third titan x forced an upgrade ) X99 deluxe 5960x with h100i 64GB ballistix sport 1Tb 850 pro (x2) Titan x sc hybrid (x3) SuperNova 1300 gold The above workstation was our first ever custom build & I'm really happy with the results, the route for expansion seems somewhat bewildering to me though & the more forum posts I read the further from a conclusion I get - hopefully someone can chuck their 2 cents in and help us reach a final decision. Thanks in advance
  10. Hola, My postgraduate program has 'strongly' recommended that I get a 17 inch laptop with a desktop GPU (NTX 970 minimum) as we will be using HTC Vive and Maya nonstop. (Of course, I can get a desktop, but I move around too much. I have been looking recently at the Alienware graphics amplifier that goes with their new line of gaming laptops. Specifically, I have been looking at the 15 inch model which seems to be quite powerful with overclocking and 32 GB ram/ GTX 980m. I feel like this option ( a smaller laptop with the option to boost the GPU fits my goals; however, I am worried about the efficacy of the GPU booster). Currently, my thought process is consisting of the fact that laptops featuring desktop Pascal GPU's will not be available for a while. I spoke to MSI and they said there is some adapter that needs to be produced before they can add them to new machines. I am hoping that I can get the 15 inch machine and just boost the GPU with a Pascal when I'm running HTC. Is there any other options I'm overlooking to run a desktop GPU without getting a massive 17 incher? Also, there is some concern that these companies are going to update their laptops soon; but, Alienware says they have just updated them. Thank you in advance. Erik (i'd also like to avoid dragons and cheesy LED's whenever possible)
  11. OK, I want to get properly into GPU rendering (I use CPU mostly), I have little money but might be able to invest in an additional GPU every few months. The dilemma is how to add them to my set up? I have been scratching my head about this for ages, so am making a concerted effort to reach out to the community for a solution. (I can't believe there aren't a lot of people in my position, but it seems you're all happily rendering away on your multi-GPU set-ups!) Required: A solution providing... 1) Multiple GPUs (want to add 4-8 over time) 2) External to workstation (no space in case) 3) Avoiding need for additional software (licences) 4) Avoiding unnessary bottlesnecks (I/O) 5) Avoiding complicated solutions (I'm more "Artist" than "Geek") 6) Avoiding expensive options (such as the Netstore NA255) 7) Available in the UK (import will add to cost) My Workstation - "Workstation Specialists WSX6.1" (ATX) CPU: i7-3930K Six-Core @ 4.20GHz CPU COOLER: Antec Kuhler h2o 920 MOBO: Asus P9X79 WS RAM: 32GB Ram GPU: Quadro 6000 (Fermi) PSU: EVGA 1000 T2 (1000W 80Plus Titanium) OS: Win 7 Pro on SSD I've looked at Amfeltec and the quote I got seemed expensive for what it is. Also apparently the I/O would cause a delay at start of rendering. The Netstore NA255 looks great to me; fast, all-in-one, etc. but it's soooo expensive here (I could by nearly four GPUs for that!) The prebuilt solutions are extravagant, because I need to focus on purchasing GPUs not paying someone to make me a rig. Conversely, looking at the bewildering array of adapters online is a minefield; the specs, the prices, the stupidly short splitter cables that wouldn't reach outside the case, etc. Will one of these be the solution? I just want to get a bunch of GPUs and render. Is it really this difficult? PSUs are easy enough, I have a spare 750W for now, and will add/replace in time. Enclosure: I could make a case or cage if the electrical componants all do the job regardless. But I am no computer builder. Dear GPU renderfolks, please... "HELP!!!" ;D
  12. http://amfeltec.com/products/gpu-oriented-cluster/ I'm looking at ways to expand my number of GPUs, for GPU rendering (Octane and RT). I have run out of space in my WS case but don't want to re-build from scratch, hence this approach to extending the hardware seems logical. Another positive, is that no extra software licenses are needed. It appears that in theory you can run four clusters (each with four GPUs) and have sixteen GPUs on one system! I'd probably just go for one cluster of four GPUs, in addition the existing GPU (running monitors) that is plugged directly into the WS mobo. What do you think?
  13. Studio/Institution: PinkSoft Genre: Residential Interior Software: 3ds max, FStormRender Website: http://www.fstormrender.com/ Description: Hi everyone I am making a demo/benchmark scene for FStormRender http://www.fstormrender.com/ This is my home kitchen. I will post more renders during modeling process. This scene will be available for downloading for free.
  14. I have been rendering for years with Vray for Rhino, from my laptop. My school, RPI, used to allow us VPN access for distributed rendering, but the adminstration does not maintain the system, so the only way to render is without textures (why render at all?). I have recently started rendering with Mental Ray on 3ds max, which will continue to work for several years outside of college because of the 3 year key. In my thinking, I want to build my own render station. I have a budget of $2000. I have added a picture of my newegg cart, with options for gpu. Please let me know what you think!
  15. Guys, I posted twice before and I got trouble on some Bank Loan Issue So haven't brought anything yet. I am really struggling for Better Performance on My Viewport and Render too. Finally I got cash , & Budget is : 10,000 $ Requirement 1 : Fastest Render Possible on this Budget Requirement 2 : Superior Viewport Performance Possibilities 1 : Anything will be Accepted i7, Xeon, Or Renderfarm (Got No Idea About Render Farm) - If i7 Then It will give me Great Render Performance then Xeon? - If Xeon Then It will give me Viewport Performance Better than i7 ? May be Depends On GPU (Only) - If Renderfarm Got No Idea At All, Give me some Idea ,Pros and Cons Please Every suggestions are welcomed, like Create 2 systems 1 for work and 1 for Render node Anything like That GPU: I am intrested in GTX980 but GTX980 8GB Is releasing soon. Thanx In Advance may god gives you wings.,,,
  16. Hi , I would like to know what the RAM on the graphics cards do in GPU render with Vray . I want to buy the new GTX Titan X for Vray RT ( 12gb ) Or the GTX Titan Z , but is really expensive Thanks
  17. Hi guys, I've been using 3Ds Max with VRay for a few years now, but only on a standard PC. I'm in the process of buying a new workstation, I have all the components I wish to buy but have come unstuck on the GPU. I am unsure how the GPU affects render times - I'm currently utilising VRay with the CPU only on long render runs - Up to 48 hours rendering vehicle/character animations. Can I impact these render runs with the GPU or shall I stick to pure CPU power or can I combine the two together.? If I can use the CPU & GPU in unison would investing in a Quadro card such as the k4000 yield any improvement over say a GTX 780.? I'm essentially asking two questions - 1. Is it beneficial to use the GPU & CPU together when rendering or simply the CPU.? If so how can this be done.? 2. If using the GPU to render long animation scenes does a Quadro card have a better impact than a GTX.? Thanks for any answers.! : )
  18. I have a question. I have Asus GTX 660TI OC 2GB i7 3820 16GB DDR3 Ram SSD 120 Samsung and another 500gb HD. I am looking to improve my machine. And there are 2 things on my mind . 1st Change graphic card. I was thinking about buying ATI FirePro v5900 or Quadro K2000 but while reading posts I saw you praise the GTX 780. 2nd Change my CPU 3820 for 4930k. I am using Vray and CPU rendering, only thing i need graphic card is for viewport performance. I need help in choosing one of this options. Criteria is time spent on modeling scenes opposed to waiting for render to come to an end. THX
  19. Im planning on buying a new desktop system for a fairly small budget (~$1100 AUD) So far i know i can get a GPU-less system new for just over $800 including case and everything needed to operate (Intel HD 4600 with the CPU) Which includes CPU: i7 4770 3.4GHz HDD: 1TB 7200rpm RAM: 16GB 1600Mhz PSU: 750W = ~$810 AUD When it comes to GPU i am struggling to choose. I can get a GTX 760 2GB for $300 Or an Quadro K600 1Gb for about $200 I know that the GTX kills the K600 on most benchmarks but my main work will be inside 3DS and Vray CPU rendering, and i've read a few reviews showing the k600 with much higher viewport fps than the GTX 670 (and no doubt the 760). My main concerns are: - Will the 1gb ram of the k600 be crippling? - Will the GTX760 leave the K600 for dead in Vray active shade? - Will the K600 have the same advantages in performance in Adobe CS6 suite as in 3DS Max viewports, or will the GTX 760 stretch its legs here? Thanks in advanced! Josh
  20. We are in need of new 3D studio Max 2014 workstations and seeing the progress GPU rendering is making with V-Ray RT, we are looking for recommendations from users in the architectural sphere as we all handle large floor plates. We are initially thinking a GTX TITAN and a GTX 680 as the TITAN is the only card with its 6gb of ram which is capable of loading the scenes. The GTX 680 with 2gb of ram looks quite capable of handling the viewports and as its Direct X these days, there is absolutly no benefit in Quadro any more. If a single TITAN is capable of giving adequate RT performance then fine otherwise we can add a second TITAN later. What we can't find is baseline information and examples on the loading on the CPU's and the number of Cores required. We have reviewed the costs and main manufacturers of workstations and of course all are selling workstations with Quadros and won't consider 'Gaming Cards' so it looks like we will have to get a made to measure system or re-sell some Quadro's ! Currently we have Dual Xeon workstations and a decent Quadro. Simple RT testing on this platform works but the single card makes max unuseably sluggish and across all 8 CPU cores it shows a continuous 50% loading while feeding the GPU the scenes. We can't decide whether an Intel Core i7 3930X Unlocked (6 x 3.2 GHZ) would be quite adequate, an Intel i7 3770K - (4 x 3.5 GHZ) - Ivy Bridge which is far better priced all be it 2/3 the performance or do we need to be looking at 2x E5-2630 Intel Six-Core Xeon 2.3GHz 15MB Cache. If we can go for i7 then there is a far greater choice of components and faster RAM, not to mention over-clocking where required. Who of you have already made the move to RT, what have you based the workstations on and what are your experiences As this will be in use for the next 4 years we need to make the right decision and our BOSS wants proof it is going to work as advertised otherwise its NO RT ANYONE seen anything appropriate on YouTube to demonstrate V-Ray RT with Architecture ?
  21. Hello everyone ! I guess i have a serious problem!! when i'm working with Iray activeshade using threads (12) the rendering isn't that fast but i'm able to move the frame buffer, opening material editor and so on, really fast BUT when i even try to take GPU advantage rendering going FASTER but all in viewport is slowed down so becomes quite impossible to do any changes !!! just yesterday i've tried a friend's laptop with a "normal" video board and was absolutelly perfect!!! SO why my Quadro 5000 act like that??? ....i've downloaded the last upgrade for both video bord and max 2014 (but was the same with 2013) Can anybody HELP me out???? PLEASEEEE thank you Soooooo much! filippo
  22. Hey I am building a new Computer for 3d rendering and especially using vray-rt for 3ds max, Lumion, and vray adv my suggested specs until now is as follows: CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz 8MB Cache Desktop Processor Motherboard: ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 Motherboard RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) or 32GB (4 x 8GB)?? VGA: Galaxy GeForce GTX 680 GC 4GB GDDR5 (this one for vrayrt rendering) and adding another one for viewport (GTX 650 DirectCU 1GB GDDR5)?? is the GTX 680 good for vray-rt?? any experiences?? + future upgrades for another gtx 680 CASE:CORSAIR Carbide Series™ 400R Case PSU: XFX ProSeries 650W PSU 80 plus Bronze---is this enough?? HD: Western Digital (WD) Caviar Black WD2002FAEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s HDD or (2 X 1TB WD black)?? Monitor: Samsung S23A750D Series 7 23 inch LED 3D Monitor This will cost about 14,000 EGP in Egypt = $2300 I can't afford Quadro GPUs and I can't afford more than this price so if there's better config for the same price range will be appreciated

  24. Hi guys, I've been testing the V-Ray RT GPU beta at work and thought I would share with you the results. I'm definately looking to test more mid range cards as well as some ATI cards but for now this will do. http://www.jigsaw3d.com/articles/v-ray-rt-gpu-benchmark-test Enjoy!
  25. Hi everyone, i have a doubt, anyone of you had using Crossfire or SLI technology using 3dsmax? is the advantages notorious? do you recommend to use this system with my graphics card? i have a 2GB GPU, thanks
