1. Hi , I have a problem while rendering an animation. I need to put togheter with After effects, some stills and some video of the same model. The animation is both day and night, and the problem is in the night version. Either with vraylights or photometric lights the still image comes out ok while the animation totally black. It means no Irradiance map or light cache is produced. Only rendering with a single pass produces something useful. Is there some settings on the lights or in the vray parameters am missing? No matter how much I rise the lights intensity, animation frames are black. I am using Vray next 4.2 and solid rock
2. Studio/Institution: SVM Genre: Commercial Exterior Software: 3ds max, Vray, & photoshop Description: Hello, I'm looking for any and all critiques please. This ski village ice rink is a personal project for practice. I have one view so far. Also, any recommendations for other forums to get critiques from 3D artists? Seems like there are many, but quality critiques are superlative! Thanks, Josh
3. Hello. You are giving great help to 3d artists everywhere. I am building a night exterior 3ds max vray scene and lighting my garden with vray spheres (radius of 80cm). My vray light spheres are placed over the exterior lights in the garden. They render with a very strong shape of a sphere, though their illumination is quite right, so I am guessing it does not have anything to do with intensity (which I have used a 150 multiplier for). My lights are casting shadows, they are double-sided, invisible, they ignore light normals, and they affect diffuse, specular and reflections. Any suggestions as to make them have less of a trace around the bollard, without darkening my scene? I also tried ies vray lights instead, but they come out somehow too pointy. I prefer the spheres. Thank you in advance for any time you give to this, Anna.
4. I have this night scene. All the buildings are just instances for now. The buildings have a box around them (a box primitive > edit poly > delete the top and bottom so it's like a sleeve) with a glass material applied. Here's what it looks like without the glass (note no noise in the selected building - bottom right): And here it is with the glass over it: There's a significant difference and it's noticeable on all buildings. But the settings are ridiculous and nothing makes a difference. Noise 0.001, various shadow subdivs as high as 32, IRR at high, LC at 2000, reflection subdivs/refraction subdivs set fairly high. But nothing puts a dent in it. Any ideas?

This was about a day and a half of work (with 2 other images). Always looking for ways to improve, so C+C most welcome! Thanks, Ryan

8. Studio/Institution: dwsel Client: personal/lighting exercise Genre: Residential Exterior Software: Anim8tor Description: Hello! It's my second post on the forum (first did not appear possibly due to wrong descriptions), my first exterior ever. It was made for challenge with 'Noir' theme and as a lighting exercise - that's why it's heavy toned and has dramatic lighting. I'm posting in the WIP forum, because I doubt if it stands to your quality level. It's rather finished by now except the empty window I didn't know what to fill it with.

12. Studio/Institution: HMC Architects Genre: Institution Software: 3ds Max, VRay, Photoshop Website: http://www.hmcarchitects.com Description: This project was done by Chris Grant and myself for a competition here at the office. The final set was around 12 images and was completed in a weeks time along side another courthouse competition with a 12 image submittal as well. I took the ropes on this one and Chris handled the other while assisting each other in placing plants, site development and other tasks. The model was started in SketchUp by our design team and refined by us in Max throughout the design process. Our final scene had millions of VRay proxies as we got our hands dirty in learning VRayscatter fairly well during this project. Almost all of the trees and plants that you see are 3D. This had to be done because there was no single side of the building that wasn't rendered. Raw render to follow

17. Hello All! I am working on a nightscene, basically a small city block with various skycrapers. I am going for this Look: The guy that made this also posted a video tutorial on how to achive this with Vray and Cinema 4d. ( VIDEO ) What he does is stack multiple randomized, checkered noisemaps on top of each other as a illuminated material. I work with 3dsMax so my question is what is the best way to make a material like this in Max? There are only fractal noisemaps and the checkered map in Max is not randomizable, at least to my knowledge. And how is it possible to stack/layer materials like this in 3dsMAX, i never needed this until now. A hint on how to do something similar with a different method would also be very helpful to me. Thank you very much in Advance

24. I am a beginner in 3dmax and the only scenes I have done have been intense day-light scenes. Now I need to a night scene of a Restaurant and do not know where to begin. I have started searching through the treads to get any direction. Does anyone have any advice to someone starting a night scene blindly? Thank you for your time. * I had originally posted this in the 3dmax Forum and then saw the post regarding keeping these type of posts in the Mental Ray Forum. My apoligizies.
