  1. Hey, you all that have built Ryzen based machines, would you mind sharing your build specs? I'm planning a Ryzen render node build and would love some advice. I've been checking pcfoo daily hoping to see the headline, '$500 Ryzen Node'...but no luck yet ;) I'm thinking a bare-bones render node, but not skimping on things that matter. For example, not putting in a 1000w psu in when it only needs 300w, but making sure its a quality 300w psu thats going to provide clean power. Node will be used solely for rendering Vray scenes from 3ds Max & Sketchup. I have 32 GB in my main workstation, but I usually have open 5 Skp files, 3 Max, 20 PSD's, 35 autocad drawings and over 100 chrome tabs, with netfilx and Spotify running simultaneously. Ok, I'm exaggerating (only a little bit), but dont' really know how much RAM I use for scenes, but it couldn't be too much....We mainly do single family residences. I imagine 16GB would more than suffice. Could always add more later. Budget is like I said, don't want fancy extras, but don't want to skimp on quality - it will be used to make money, but would like to keep it cheap as possible. Look for the best ROI. Its there to make money...so I don't split hairs about deciding if the faster chip is worth $75 more...if it costs $75 more but saves many hours a year in render time...its a no-brainer. Sounds like it will be worth it to water cool for highest stable overclock? OK..I'm starting to ramble... Basically, want to put together a professional grade, no-frills build. There is currently just about zero info around the web about ryzen render nodes, so I can't wait to hear some feedback. Excited about seeing another 16 buckets rendering but not having to pay Intel prices! Cheers! Greg

We have a workstation based on i7, which is enough to work on, but renderings and previewing both take long and waste our grapic working hours. I build some specs and are looking for some opinions form people who have more experience then me in such topic. We have formed such builds: 2x Intel Xeon8C, E5-2620V3, 2.4Ghz, 15MCache, 8.00 GT/sec 6 Core OR Xeon 6C 2x Coller Master HYPER 212 SE ASUS Serwer Z10P LGA 2011-3 Kingston 4x8GB 2133MHz DDR4 CL15 DIMM SR Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB SATA III FRACTAL DESIGN / Corsair Chieftec A80 550W 80+ Gold +Win8PRO OR 1x Intel Core i7 Extreme 8 Core 1x Coller Master HYPER 212 SE ASUS X99 LGA 2011-3 and everything else the same.   4. Hello, my first post ere (although I was silently observing this forums for a while - creepy, I know) I am currently working on new Render Node spec for a small office I am working for. We currently own 3 years old i7 workstation (will post exact spec tomorrow morning, when I'm in the office) which renders a final frame in 3ds + Vray ~4-6 hours. As for modelling and postproduction, this spec is enough most of the time. It's slightly too slow for previewing, which tends to be very time consuming. We mainly work on architectural visualisation we make for ourselves. Since the workstation is enough to work with, but not enough to render, we are considering expanding the set with a new render node. My first shot was creating something similliar to Boxx Render PRO1. Something like this: Single Xeon E51650v3 3.5 GHz, 15 MB cache (6core) 16GB DDR4-2133 SODIMM ECC no graphic card/integrated 240GB SSD SATA Gigabit Ethernet set up on our own though - I don't really believe in BOXX service working well in Poland, and price can go down something around 50% down BOXX vs. similliar custom build. Our budget varies, we aim in possible rendering a single final frame in under one hour time (preferably 15 mins ). Atm we are aiming at something between 2000$-3000$ but we can invest more if we can expect surge in working conditions for our graphic dude I hope this illustrates a situation. Now - I am no computer guru, we are about to consult with local service. But I would like to get some feedback from people who actually work in architecture and have some experience with hardware. 1./ Main issue I am having is - is it worth it to invest in Render node and leave Workstation significantly slower then Node or should we rather change old unit into Node and buy a new workstation (then we will upgrade the node eventually, when we think its worth it)? My logic is - if WS is enough for our workflow in every aspect except rendering, then its worth it to buy a node and save money (GPU, HDDs, optical drives, power(?) etc. ) and delegate all rendering tasks from WS to it (including bigger previews). 2./ It is important to us that this solution is scalable. Meaning, I would like to be able to replace processors, add GPU, eventually add more nodes of similliar type to the whole system later (in what case is it justified to set up a rack server instead of standalone units?) 3./ What local network solution would you recommend? Do we actually need separate LAN/disk space just for this purpose? What bandwidth can jobs of this scale require to work seamlessly? We currently run a Windows Server on 2 mirrored RAIDs. Local network is built on LAN: WAN --- router --- switch --- clients (including server). This seves not only for 3ds but also for other CAD applications we're working with etc. 4. / Is it worth investing in Dual Core MoBo in price range 2000-3000$? Any contribution will be welcome, hope I don't ask for too much information The idea is just forming its shape and I am really not sure, were it is going to lead us
  5. Hi, i am looking on buying some new equipment, but the most urgent one should be a core i7 render node, meaning just for rendering tasks. Budget will be small, say $500 to $600. I read a comment from Dimitris Tolios in other post that this might be possible. If this is so, i will like to go for one of those.... I do not live in USA, but i always buy online from there on Amazon, or others, and i pay a transportation service to bring it here. So please give me recommendations based on US stores if possible. I have never built a system myself, but i am eager to do it. I have always bought brand computers, but now my budget for this is restrained. I will be buying new workstation in the near future, so in the meantime this render node will be working independently on rendering tasks that i will send from my old workstation. I work with 3ds Max. Thanks in advance, i hope to hear your suggestions or comments.

Regarding what Benjamin Steinert mentioned in the Above post (LINK) about optimizing the Render NODE, having all the resources (textures, proxies, etc...)..stored locally in each render node.... How does that syncing work? what is that software that makes that automatically? Right now i have all the project files on my workstation, along with textures, proxies, etc, but for each render job, i copy MANUALLY the project file, along with any NEW texture or proxi file i have created... I just bought a small QNAP NAS, and i was thinking that the best setup was to have all the project files, textures, proxies, etc stored on the NAS, (Just as it was a file server)... and nothing stored on my workstation or the render nodes, so all the machines can access all the files in just ONE LOCATION... Will this be a bad idea? is it better to have everything locally as He mentioned? Thanks for your help..
  7. I do residential architectural design work - exteriors with grass and a lot of trees, and interiors. I have a large task list of renderings ahead of me, justifying a hardware upgrade. I have a dual 6 core xeon system and I was going to let that become my render node and build a new i7 3930 or 3960 overclocked workstation for setting up the renderings and working in REVIT, etc. When the render is ready to run, I want to send it over to my node and keep working. Here are my questions: 1) Would I ever need more than 32 gb memory in my V-Ray workstation. (I will let the workstation work along with the node for over night rendering.) I am considering 64gb memory. 2) Should I consider a Tesla GPU to run RT while I am setting up my renders, to see in 'real time' what is coming together? I feel that a 3gb GTX card will not fit most of my scenes. I know some are using RT for production, but I feel like it has a lot of maturing to do. Is ANYONE in architecture using it to simply boost productivity? Thanks in advance for your suggestions/advice!
  8. Hi, i use 3DS Max and Vray and i want to build a render node to assist my macbook pro during distributed rendering only. I have priced the parts on newegg and the total is $480 I would like advice about whether you think this set up will work because this is my first attempt to custom build a pc. It will be built around the 6 core AMD Phenom II 1090T with 4GB ram. I have stripped back everything to the bare essentials and discarded any unnecessary parts for me to get my work done pretty fast, at the LOWEST price! I want the box to be discrete so I am considering a micro ATX motherboard and small case. The main questions I have are: - The motherboard has an integrated ATI Radeon HD 4290 so would it be fine to not have an additional graphics card as my laptop will deal with graphics? (also i'm not interested in GPU rendering) - Using the small form factor motherboard and case will probably trap more heat inside but the case has 2 fans. If I just turn this on for distributed rendering & maybe take the side panel off, will I have major overheating problems?   9. Hello all, I’m planning on making 3 render nodes and would like some advice. I’m planning to set up the following: Case: supermicro CSE-512L-260 Asus P8H67-M Pro revB3 Processor: intel I-7 2600K, 3,4GHZ 4cores/8threads Cooler: ??? need advice on this one Ram: DDR3 non ECC 1333 – 2x4GB HD: western digital caviar blue SATA 7200rpm 500GB Simple DVD Win 7 pro 64 bit eng oem TOTAL: 790 euros incl. VAT x 3 makes 2370 euros incl VAT. My current system: Dual intel xeon E5620 2,4GHZ – 24GB RAM – nvidia quadro fx 3800 - win7 64bit Running 3dsmax 2011 with mentalray as renderer. Is this the right way to go? Are these the maximum cores for metal ray satellite with distributed bucked rendering? Will this mean I can render at (2X2.4GHZ)+(3x3.4GHZ)= 15GHZ? Will I be able to use my main workstation fully while the 3 nodes render in the mean while? Will I be able to put GPU graphic cards in the nodes and use them for gpu based rendering like iray? All information and advice welcome. I’m really new at this and the info on the internet is I’m so fragmented losing my way here. Thanks.
