  1. Hi, I would like to ask what build is the best for 3ds max and corona and a little bit of lumion/animation work. I mainly use corona for rendering and seldom use lumion. Given a budget up to $2000 what are the hardwares I need? I am not familiar with the latest tech as of today in the 3d viz world and would like your suggestions. I am planning to buy the components hopefully next year. I also plan to have the dual monitors within the given budget as I can just buy cheap keyboard and mouse. Any recommendations will be highly appreciated. Thank you, Vincent
  2. Hi All, This is a request for one more build for RHINO + VRAY workstation and I would love to hear the feedback. Its envisioned as a mid range tower CPU - AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 2950X or AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 1950X OR would you suggest INTEL? Anything higher than this would sky rocket the price. GPU GTX 1080 TI or Quadro P2000. Or anything particular ? Rest I think would add up accordingly. Since I feel in this forum, most of the people are use to working with VRAY and RHINO, I would be really helpful to hear the feedback. And if there's any portable workstation that you think would fit, give me a heads up.

  4. Hi guys, So finally its time for me to upgrade and get a decent workstation. Here is the configuration i am looking at. Main functions would be 3dsmax - modelling(not too much as our clients send most of the 3d), texturing, lighting, VRAY, PS I am going to invest some time to learn cinema4d, corona, zbrush and a few other programs.   7. I'm looking into a new single processor build. I noticed a big PRICE difference between the i7 5960X and i7 5820K. ($1500AUD vs $500AUD) It will be used as a workstation and then put to use in the render farm but possibly has potential for a good multiple GPU's renderer as the industry makes a shift. I see the Max # of PCI Express Lanes on intelArk for the CPU's is 40 vs 28 respectively. Does this mean I'm limiting the number of GPU's I can use in SLI configuration and would this mean the max GPU's I could use then are 3 ?? ( assuming GTX 980 are being used) Any thoughts? Has anyone run into any other limitations with an overclocked 5820K in a workstation? and should I be looking at a different build? Build cost is $3500AUD ($2570 USD), 64GB RAM, ASUS X99-Deluxe/U3.1, SSD, 1000WPSU, NZXT Kraken H61. Thanks

I'm looking to upgrade my freelancing computer from an ancient i5-760 (quad, no HT, 2.8Ghz), and I'm having trouble deciding between these two chips: 6700K, 32GB, 4 cores at 4.0Ghz, for $611 USD. 5820K, 32GB, 6 cores at 3.3Ghz, for $733 USD. I'm looking to do the following: - Modeling with 3DSMax/Zbrush - Texture work with Photoshop/Quixel - Rendering interiors and products with VRay - Use VRay RT for lighting testing and look dev. - Work with realtime engines (and some VR) in Unity and Unreal. - Some video editing and 3D compositing. - A bit of animation rendering. - Bit of gaming, but I know either is just as good for this. I've read here and in other places that both chips are very comparable, in spite of the different core count, but does this hold true when we consider these other purposes? The Corona benchmarks still place the 5820K above the 6700K, and chances are the French VRay benchmark out there that suggests otherwise isn't taking into account that Light Cache is singlethreaded, and that tip the result in the 6700K's favor. As it is right now I've basically been avoiding CPU rendering as my GTX970 can do it much faster, but I've also run into its limitations quickly when it comes to interiors. Baking textures for realtime objects with my current cpu also poses some problems, some simple models can take 22 minutes for one of several passes in xNormal, making iterations an absolute pain. In the case of large VRay renderings, I don't have access to a render farm, so I'm thinking of using a cloud rendering solution when the need arrives, regardless of the chip. However, I'd like to be able to rely on my system, even if it involves waiting for a while. I can't afford a dual Xeon machine either. For a variety of reasons, I can't risk my equipment by overclocking. RMA's are next to impossible to carry out, temperatures in summer easily reach 40°C, and I don't have access to air conditioning. Therefore, I need to keep it safe, and can't consider OCing the 5820K to 4Ghz. I understand most of what I'll actually be doing is single-threaded work, but a lot of what I do is also multi-threaded. However, is it enough to favor going for the slower 6-core? I might sound like I'm deciding for the 5820K, but I'm really not sure. Which of these two do you think would be the better option for me? But is it better to go for i7-5820k or anyother 6 core processor.if so what are the other part configuration which would support that processor It would be of great help if you could suggest a best configuration for the above mentioned softwares and around the price range of $1800.   10. Having trouble deciding which route to take...was hoping to get some opinions/advice to help sway me one way or the other. My work consists of Autocad 2015, PS CC, Sketchup 2015, Vray 2.0...and also dabble in other Adobe apps...lately AfterEffects, and trying out 3Dsmax. This is my current machine (started out as a Lenovo k450): Intel Core i5-4430 3.0GHz Quad-Core Processor Asus B85M-G Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard PNY XLR8 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (came with MOBO) 2x Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive PNY GeForce GTX 770 4GB Video Card XFX XTR 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply I plan on using some of the parts from the above machine for my new workstation...either a 4790k or 5820k setup. Then adding the original parts back into K450 to use for a little home office pc. I was set on building a 4790k 'modeler' with a slight overclock to use as my main workstation and also using it for rendering for a while until I saved up money to build a 5820k 'renderer'. I'm ready to buy parts now, but I'm hesitant...I'm thinking it might be a good idea to just build a 5820k (OC'd to 4.4) for my main workstation, which I'll also be able to render on much faster in the meantime, then start building cheaper render nodes in the future as funds become available.   11. Hello, my first post ere (although I was silently observing this forums for a while - creepy, I know) I am currently working on new Render Node spec for a small office I am working for. We currently own 3 years old i7 workstation (will post exact spec tomorrow morning, when I'm in the office) which renders a final frame in 3ds + Vray ~4-6 hours. As for modelling and postproduction, this spec is enough most of the time. It's slightly too slow for previewing, which tends to be very time consuming. We mainly work on architectural visualisation we make for ourselves. Since the workstation is enough to work with, but not enough to render, we are considering expanding the set with a new render node. My first shot was creating something similliar to Boxx Render PRO1. Something like this: Single Xeon E51650v3 3.5 GHz, 15 MB cache (6core) 16GB DDR4-2133 SODIMM ECC no graphic card/integrated 240GB SSD SATA Gigabit Ethernet set up on our own though - I don't really believe in BOXX service working well in Poland, and price can go down something around 50% down BOXX vs. similliar custom build. Our budget varies, we aim in possible rendering a single final frame in under one hour time (preferably 15 mins ). Atm we are aiming at something between 2000$-3000$ but we can invest more if we can expect surge in working conditions for our graphic dude I hope this illustrates a situation. Now - I am no computer guru, we are about to consult with local service. But I would like to get some feedback from people who actually work in architecture and have some experience with hardware. 1./ Main issue I am having is - is it worth it to invest in Render node and leave Workstation significantly slower then Node or should we rather change old unit into Node and buy a new workstation (then we will upgrade the node eventually, when we think its worth it)? My logic is - if WS is enough for our workflow in every aspect except rendering, then its worth it to buy a node and save money (GPU, HDDs, optical drives, power(?) etc. ) and delegate all rendering tasks from WS to it (including bigger previews). 2./ It is important to us that this solution is scalable. Meaning, I would like to be able to replace processors, add GPU, eventually add more nodes of similliar type to the whole system later (in what case is it justified to set up a rack server instead of standalone units?) 3./ What local network solution would you recommend? Do we actually need separate LAN/disk space just for this purpose? What bandwidth can jobs of this scale require to work seamlessly? We currently run a Windows Server on 2 mirrored RAIDs. Local network is built on LAN: WAN --- router --- switch --- clients (including server). This seves not only for 3ds but also for other CAD applications we're working with etc. 4. / Is it worth investing in Dual Core MoBo in price range 2000-3000$? Any contribution will be welcome, hope I don't ask for too much information The idea is just forming its shape and I am really not sure, were it is going to lead us

  13. I had my computers stolen last weekend during a home robbery which pushed my timetable for replacing 4year tech to NOW. I was just resigning myself to buying a boxx workstation ($6k+) or a precision T7610 ($7k+) with a dual Xeon e52680v2-similar to what I have at work, after my computers were stolen during a home-robbery this weekend. I was researching any posts on Boxx's renderpro and came across dtolios' site regarding a home renderbox, and after an evening of reading through the threads, have come up with this setup. Im an architecture professor and freelance in design so I do heavy rhino/grasshopper, 3ds max with MR and Maxwell, Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, occasionally AE & Premiere (for video) and some sound design with Reason. I would love your feedback on getting this setup: it's obviously less than an amazing Boxx setup, but at 1/4 the price, I could build an armada of render-nodes to handle renders. I've built every one of my desktops since 2001.
  14. I am planning to build a machine to be used with 3ds max and VRay. At the moment, due to old hardware, I only use CPU rendering. Having played a bit on a workstation with a GTX Titan, I like it and think it could fit my workflow to use VRay RT and/or the progressive renderer. I did quite a bit of a research and for me the GPU is the hardest thing to decide on. The way nVidia cripple cards and how they position them, makes choosing one, even for a somewhat aware computer enthusiast willing to go and do research, overwhelming. Drivers and lack of optimization for different applications confuse things even more. In short I would like both great viewport performance and VRay RT too. I see people praising the Quadro K2000/K4000 and at the same time people saying Quadro cards are useless nowadays for 3ds max viewport and that GTX cards outperform them. A thing to consider is I am using a mATX case so there is space for two double width cards with no space between or around them. An option might be to buy one card which would be very good for viewport and maybe still good for RT so I could experiment and see how it goes. After that I could buy a great card for GPU rendering (Titan Black, GTX 780 - version with 6GB). If I go that route I could wait for the new series for the second card. For that computer case (TJ08-E) a reference design would be better, so it would blow the hot air outside the case and two cards would survive inside.
