Iain Denby
Anyone checked out this new sony 23" tft? It looks amazing, and I wondered if it overcomes previous problems using tft's for high end Cad and 3D? By the way, it's £2300. But if you could afford it, would you have one? Greg Hess
"and I wondered if it overcomes previous problems using tft's for high end Cad and 3D?" What problems would that be? I've been using a VG191B viewsonic for over six months now. Just need color calibration software if your rendering to print. Brilliant screen. Iain Denby
I've heard that low refresh rates cause problems with things that move. (Blur). Also problems with lines temporarily dissapearing in AutoCad, dead pixels.
Greg Hess
Dead pixels is always an issue...but that is usually resolved by returning the display for a replacement. I've build around 20 or so workstations this year with LCD's and not one has had a dead pixel. Blur: Most of the new ones have a sub 25ms response rate. You will notice it at first, if your really sensitive, but after a day or two you become acustomed to it, and its no longer physically noticable. Refresh: Never a problem with lcd's. In fact its their strength. A CRT's refresh rate is the # of times per second the entire tube refreshes...on an LCD its the # of times each individual pixel refreshes..so going by hertz with LCD's doesn't work very well, as its flicker free at 60 Hertz. Lines temporarily disappearing...I could see this as a video card issue, but never a display issue.
Iain Denby
Gregg Thanks for the information, that's very incouraging to hear. I'm even more interested in this new Sony 23"er (P232W)now. Have you seen one yet?
Greg Hess
No I haven't unfortuantly. I don't think I'd be looking at one, since its way outta my price range. One of the things you have to remember as well...is what your going to power the LCD with. A super high resolution is cool and all...but if your doing 3D, most video cards that are on the market DO NOT support 3D acceleration at that high a res. Most accelerations start reaching bandwidth gaps at 1600x1200x32, and the pack thins more and more as the resolution climbs higher. I guess you need to decide if the screen is more important then the speed. (I'm assuming this is the sony with the ungodly huge resolution)
Iain Denby
Greg Didn't know about that, thanks. This is a 23" screen with aspect ratio of 16:10 and a native resolution of 1920 X 1200.
mbr
Look at the new computer arts mag for a review. They gave it 5 stars. Wow! And to think, Christmas is only days away... !
