Start-Up Application List ** VERY COOL

Recommended Posts

Ever wonder why your system takes 20 minutes to start up? Even when you have the fastest box out there? It's probably all of you services and startup apps. Here is a VERY complete list of almost all of the startup apps that you may find and detials of what they do and if it is safe to remove them. It sped up my load time by about 5 times.

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

Also download Reg Cleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

It allows you to edit your startup programs. I believe Greg had reccomended this app before. Also does a great job at Reg cleaning too.

PS Greg do you know of any other speed up tips for startup? It seems that Zone Alarm and McAffee VS are real hogs at startup. Not much I can do about them, but anything else to speed things up would be great.

Service pack3...disabling the Mcaffee autoscan at boot, removing zone alarm from the system and purchasing a hardware router.

I haven't looked at the link yet, but disabling services not in use can also reduce memory usage and increase boot time.

(Stuff like fax service, smartcard reader, remote registry service, whole crapload of stuff you can disable)

WARNING: Disabling services can SCREW UP YOUR SYSTEM. BE WARNED!

Thanks for the link btw Jeff!.

disabling the Mcaffee autoscan at boot

I very bad at rememebering to do full scans, so I left it at autoscan, but that it a real pig that is for sure. Myabe ought to get better. I just hate haveing to leave my sytem on all the time (ie overnigt to do backups and scans, derag because my power bill is already through the roof. Over double from last year this time. (before CGA) ;)

removing zone alarm from the system and purchasing a hardware router.

But without a super highend router that allows port blocking based on IP, if I open a port Zone Alarm is the only thing that will keep people out. Well the junior hackers anyway. I have a linksys router now.

Mcaffee blah blah. (I deleted the quote hehe)

Could upgrade to norton 2003 :)

You shouldn't have anyneed for a software firewall then. Its quite difficult to bypass a hardware router, unless you know what you doing, in which case, zone alarm isn't going to stop them.

Of course these are all options. I'll try and get a services list up for you, I usually disable about 12 of them.

Hey Saturn!

If you ever install any applications such as imesh, kaza, napster, or app's formerly known as napster, make sure you also install an anti-spyware program. Just installing one of those applications can cut your performance down from 5-20%. I've seen machines with 20-80 spyware programs, all taking system resources, memory, and a variety of other performance levels away from the applications and tasks.

Download adaware at...

www.lavasoft.com

Its fast, its quick, and it does the one thing regcleaner can't. It searches for registry keys that are in use, but in use stealing your personal information. Regcleaner only identifies registry keys that are no longer useful or even attached to anything.
