Tell me about Arch viz

Alright I've never actually done Arch viz before, but I've had a lot of experience in 3d modeling, texturing, lighting, etc...

So i might have this gig coming up where I take the blueprints for (3) single lot houses that are in the process of being designed by an architect, and basically make 3D outside renderings for each of them. The problem I am running into is how to charge this client. Should I charge by project, or by the hour? What would you estimate the cost of such a project would be?

My estimate is a 40 hour work week per house, for a few high quality 3D renderings @ about $45 an hour. Obviously this will give and take depending on how much i actually spend on it. What about adding "fly thru" capabilities the model? Obviously that would take significantly longer because the whole insde of the house would have to be modeled and then messing with the software to create such a thing. Anyone have experience with this?

Also, if there are any links out there that can help me out with this please hook me up ;)

Thanks in advance for the replies, I'll be watchin this thread closely!

without looking at the houses to be modeled, i would say the price and hours you are charging is fine. although i am guessing that the could be built and rendered in less than 40 hours by a proffesional, but then a proffesional would more than likely be billing at more than $45 an hour. ...i would suggest a flat price of $1500 per house, given that you imply he is willing to pay justly, and you are new to the game.

i don't know your skill set, but a true newbie to arch viz might have problems charging that if the quality of his work is not up to snuff. a proven proffesional would easily get that and more.

seriously now, the Artists Guild have a book that details how much people usually ask for $$$ in any branch of art and design and multimedia.... it evcen has a few pages about arch viz.

they call it

"Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines" at amazon I found it at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0932102123/qid=1116364779/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-4381937-5724904?v=glance&s=books

THey propose $100-$150/hour on average to a whopping $250/hour if you are a seasoned (salted and peppered) professional.

but the one I got 3 years ago has a yellow cover...maybe this is the new edition?

It helped me set my pricing every once and a while when in the rare instances I had a freelance job. but since I am employed at a firm I make much much less than freelancers and the policy here at the office is no freelancing or moonlighting or else you're out the door. I hope my employer won't read this he might think I don't like it here... money isn't everything...

lol...the gig is for my friend's fiance's father... who is pretty damn rich.

if you know him personnaly get the money in advance...Too many times I worked with relatives, uncles (two uncles are builders, one from mom's side, one from dad's, none of them paid me a penny for renderings), and almost ...no every time they didn't pay...

will do... i'll work out a pricing scheme if we get this gig.

Funny though, the project is around the denver area too!

Thanks for the help! I'm worried about modeling and texturing the house... what I am worried about is getting that crisp lifelike look that the professionals can acheive. i think with enough practice (im doing a sample model first before the project just to show the guy that im capable) i can get the lighting and rendering correct.

Does anyone have any recources on achieving this look, with Maya as my primary tool? I have heard Turtle is one of the better renderers for arch viz, but im not certain. i will definately be researching this area further.

Thanks again ya'll
