I have an autocad file I need to import. It is just a 2d top view but I need it for measuring accurately. When I import it it seems to come across ok but it slows my viewport down like crazy. I deleted all the excess stuff that it has on it that I dont need but its still really slow. Below is the file summary. Is there some setting I can use that will speed this up? I have a P4 2.8 1GB ram ATI 9800pro 128MB.

Clean your 2d work as much as you can, delete, text, hatches, and points, that will speed up the process, once done that convert your 2d work to editable splines, amke shure that you don't have any blocks, because max read the blocks as instances.

If that doesn't work, generate an AI (adobe ilustrator file) from the export menu, 3ds max can impor AI files containing 2d data, use version 4.0 or so, because Max doesn't have support for recent versions...

if neither of these works, can you post the file?

*and dont forget to PURGE the whole file :)
