VRay shadow

If you are using vray lights you will get soft shadows and there is an option there thats called "smooth surface shadows"

If its any other light (spot, omni, IE, etc) with vray shadows theres an option called "area shadow" with adjustable parameters for this effect.

Both of them will increase your rendering time.

sorry but I'm making this thread back to live after some years....found it on the net and refered here.

the "area shadow" does not make the shadows blured even if you put the U size to 100 or 1000.

there is suppose to be a "shadow plugin" for vray but I can not find it.

any ideas?. I use vray 1.5.

errr...we are in late 2007!

sorry forgot to make that clear :o

I do design shops and we need to place some good amount of spots around rigth over displays/tables.

I do use standard spots with far attenuation and with vray shadows. they work very well, but the vray shadow omited can not be made diffused, it's all the time very sharp, no matter what I do.

Vray 1.5 only have "planes, domes and spheres"...not any kind of "spot". Yep I could use vray planes instead, but the "length" of the ligth emited can not be controled, besides, using so many vray planes (I use vray planes for window ligths) the render times would increase tremendously.

here is an example:

well. it works now...here home!

dunno what I was doing wrong at work  ..never mind, I'll try to render the stand again with the vray shadows parameters using the "area shadow" & increasing the U size.

I can see it realy slows the render when using the "area shadow", but I guess there is no way to do it differently and soften the shadows edges. With up to 30 - 40 spots per shop, it may not be very practical this solution but certainly more realistic....one deadly compromise :(

btw, I can see that the "standard shadow parameters" do not work anymore when using the "area shadow", so, how can I change the shadow intensity & colour? . Recall reading somewhere how to change it, humm..I'll need to find it again, any help?

last question, how can I make thumbnails for the inserted images...they get kinda huge when inserting directly in the thread

cheers. Eric

EDIT: can't realy understand how come vray does not have "spot" or "direct" ligths...perhaps it's just me whishing that.

don't know about the colour as I usually don't use any other lights than vray's, but here's a recent post by vlado about intensity:

You must uncheck "transparent shadows" to be able to change the intensity.
