Hokuz
My name is Dragan and I'm freelance artist. Not so long ago I got interested in computer arts and started practicing. My first computer, back in Belgrade,Yugoslavia, was based on Intel Celeron running at 350Mhz, 64mb of system memory and ATI Rage pro with 8Mb of video memory. Soon I wanted more, got 3d Studio max 3.1 and hit my first wall. Open GL and memory shortage, booth system and video. But I've continue to go trough slowdowns and learned to make low poly models which, with the right texture and design, still seemed to be pretty good looking. But that wasn't enough. As it will became a common practice in the future, I did my first major upgrade to Nvidia Ge Force 256 and AMD Thunderbird at 900MHz, 256 Mb of system memory and moved to Windows 2000.And than it came for the first time. My 3D Studio started to behave rather strange now. Crashes and all troubles that could mean only that something serious was wrong. Reinstalling, both 3D Studio and Windows 2k some 2 million times, updating and reconfiguring BIOS settings, didn't helped at all except that now I can do all that with my eyes shout. It was a question of backward compability, as I think now, cause 3D Studio 3.1 was designed to run smoothly under Win NT but not under Win2k.So the solution was moving to Max 4.0 which was new and made me feel like I have my Celeron configuration again on Athlon motherboard (abit kt133).It worked fine under Win 2k and I liked it alot but there was an after taste of feeling being cheated in a royal way. Only thing that made me some comfort was that at least I didn't paid thousands of dollars for that. But I'm going to do it now. Since now,I live in USA and still have strength and will to mess with 3D.And of course there is Windows XP and 3DStudio max 5. Currently I have an OEM Windows 98SE and trial version of 3D studio max 5 that will run for next 28 days. Yes it looks very nice, half 3d Studio half Maya, and it requires network of 15 HAL 9000 computers to work and IMAX screen so you can see actually all working space. Well maybe not 15 HAL's but certainly same quantity of Intel Xeon P4 processors according to the built in optimizations. Not only that Discreet wants me to buy Windows XP, which I hate by the way, but it also wants me to buy Intel based systems that are 3 times more expensive and equally slower than AMD platforms. And when you buy 3D Studio 5 what will you get? Improvement? I don't think so. Philosophy that says that new version is: 1. Two times larger than previous one, equals to...2.That is four times more demanding with hardware & OS resources, equals to...3.That is eight times more harder to master, which equals finally to fact that is...4.SIXTEEN TIMES MORE EXPENCIVE, in terms of money and time, than previous version, is soo much dead. It was killed by Blender, which showed, despite all flaws, how things look like when they are done right and done right from the start. Also there is a Discreet philosophy that says that 3d Studio is more "a docking bay" for plugins than it is a complete solution. Which again, leads to fact, that if you want to make a decent portfolio that will leave a mark you will need to pay four times more money for creating 3D Studio's working environment than for the 3D Studio it self. So now why I simply go and use MAYA or do something more blue color like construction workz or something like that. Well I'm pretty hooked up to 3d Studio and I want to succeed in game industry that uses 3D Studio very much. Also I'm married now and there is a family future plan, involved too.So I'll use my freedom and make my own AMD workstation and by Windows 2k and 3d Studio 4.2 and work hard towards my goal. But I wrote this cause I have a realy nasty felling that something seriously wrong is going on with this world. Story about Discreet alliance with WINTEL really made me sad and feeling kind of lost a little bit so I just thought to write this so I can share my frustrations with the world. Just kidding....Right. [ January 05, 2003, 10:29 PM: Message edited by: Hokuz ]

Hokuz
Hello Greg, Oh, sorry cause I was so unclear in my previous post, I was pretty much frustrated not only with 3DS but also with my sound card that I recently bought and it has a malfunction… I guess that the question would be: Do the Discreet has a right to optimize their software for only certain type of components in this case Intel based platforms. Cause, as I was heard, this supposed to be a free market and “let the best win” type of rule in business, right? Or maybe I was wrong after all, maybe Intel really needs optimizations so it can work properly and AMD doesn’t. What “optimization” means in this case? Cause if it is what I said above than it is really a rude way to make business and maybe violation of anti-monopoly laws that would be bad for us all. Even for Intel, they will never make an effort to make a better product if they get such benefits from the software manufactures, right? Well that would be it. I hope I was clearer this time. All best, Dragan
Greg Hess
The intel optimizations present in Max5 effect both Pentium III, Pentium IV, Xeon, Athlon XP, and Athlon MP processors. Though PR might make you think its Intel only, its not. Benefits are seen on both platforms. http://www.3dluvr.com/content/maxbench.php
