character studio bodies

We are playing around with Character Studio in 3dsmax. We created a Biped, and made him move around, ect... now we would like to test out some bodies on him (or even better, her) but I can't find any free ones to test out. Anyone have links for a free body model. I am new to Character Studio, so I am just trying to figure it out right now, and not wanting to spend any money yet.

i don't know if you have used chaacter studio, but it is really easy. you just tell it where the feet should go, and the model is alreaad progra,ed with a biped skeleton, and moves it i a walking fashion, complete with arm swing. the leg crossover is a bit of a problem if you look closely, and yes, there was odd shadow breakdon around the feet, but still pretty cool.

you can also tell it to just walk or run at a normal pace, and it will place the footsteps for you, and the character will move at the proper speed.

ya, the shadows broke down around the feet

no i like your new clog style dance.... 3DS ships with free dance style motion capture files like breakdancing, etc.. it's really fun....

also it looks like your leg geomerty is intersecting, i think there is a setting in CS to avoid this..

It looks like he's squatting down a bit. Shouldn't the legs be a bit more straight? Perhaps I'm wonng, but he looks like he's just had some kind of really uncomfortable alien examination in a place we'd all rather not talk about...

Where can you find mocap files? I would love to really say I can animate well but I can't. I too like the 3d people and I would like to go this way but I am not good at this yet and a way to make it a bit more painless would be great.

I don't mind learning it but when I want/need the result for a project I don't have the time to experament.

Ya, I was just playing around, and setting footsteps without paying much attention to where he was going.

haven't used them in an actual project yet. i wanted to mess around with them after seeing them in a max 7 demo seminar. i can't remember the name of the studios whose work it was, i will post a link to their work later. i have it written down at the office.

CHG,

Really cool thread ;). You gotta look into importing Mocap and realistic movement cycles...takes all the fun out of animating LOL..However the results are painlessly awsome hehehe.

that is the next step. the standard walking is pretty rigid, and doesn't flow smooth enough, but it is still fun to mess around with.

You can look for Motion Builder files in FBX format, compatible with max. You still need to know how to animate and understand f-curves fairly well to work the bugs out of blending clips and fixing cycles, they aren't always perfect ;) It is easier than getting down and dirty into say, a hand moving at x feet/sec key framing figuring the natural in and out curves.... and it stills looks like c3po picking up a coffe cup..... arrrg

Wish I had 60-80k to buy a Mocap rig or the up to 1k/hour to use someone elses LOL Yea I'm dreamin'...big time

http://www.urbansimulations.com is the company whose demo reals were shown during the Max demo seminar.

Check out their demo real, and also check out the 'caixanova vigo'. It is under architecture - peliculas - 02 caixanova vigo. The womne walking into the scene from the left is really working it. Kind of entertaining knowing it is character studio with motion capture applied.

  • 4 months later...

Travis,

I just purchased a set of the lowpolygon3d animatable people and some bip motions to go along with them. When you imported your lowpoly person into max, did the biped come in at a smaller scale? When I import, all the lowpoly meshes come in at normal size, but the bipeds come in about 1" tall which really throws off their movements. If I try to scale the biped up in figure mode to match the hight of the mesh, the mesh person also scales up! It gets even worse. If I try to load a bip file the mesh distorts and stretches during playback. Man it's ugly! I can't seem to get things to work. What's going on? Any tips are appreciated.
