Sawyer
I have a dual Xeon (1.8) and after last nights blackouts and thunderstorms (& me getting ready to do a large animation) I thought it time to pick up a power supply. Is there anything I need to know about what amount of power I need to keep my cpu running or is it just what brand I can afford? As always thanks SF
Jeff Mottle
Not sure what brand you want to get but this will help if you choose to get an APC. http://www.apc.com/template/size/apc/index.cfm?action=single_workstation&temp_country=US&device_type=workstation
Ernest Burden III
Get an APC UPS ASAP and CYA. There really is only one brand, APC. You want to add up the wattage of everything you will plug into it. W=VA so if your CPU power supply is 450W, and your in the US-120Volts, it will draw up to 3.75Amps, or put another way, a UPS that boasts 750VA will deliver about 625Watts for whatever the runtime is listed at. If you use less watts your runtime will go up. Didn't I just do a thread on this last week? I tried the 'APC calulator' Jeff pointed to and it suggested the very model I use, a Smart-UPS750XL It was about $400 I think. If you hit the maximum VA rating on the UPS it will shreek at you mercilessly until you buy a bigger one. That used to happen to me whenever the graphics card had to fill a screen with white, or run a big model in OpenGL. Now that one serves my printers. So buy big. Do it today, call one of the warehouse places and they can ship it right out. Your local CompUSA will not likely have the server models folks like us need. Besides, those things are HEAVY.
