I built an external 500Gb Firewire unit for backups, mp3's, storing video off my camera etc - basically bought the case from these guys:

http://www.specialtech.co.uk

and put a couple of Maxtor 250Gb ATA133 drives in - works pretty well - you can work with the video footage without any problems off the drives and it's heaps faster than backing up over a 100Mb LAN. Cost about £300 ($550 ish) the drives are in removable cages and so far it's been very reliable.

It's not as fast as having drives connected directly to the SATA bus and I don't think you'd gain anything by using 10K drives, but it's plenty fast enough to access files from.

You can also get Firewire 800 units with 4 drive racks - which would be closer to what you're looking for - not sure if they do RAID versions as well. I'd imagine that for a $1000 you should be able to put together a monster setup.

Have a look at the Lacie website for pre built systems (though special tech also do them and are probably way cheaper!)

Hope it helps

the solution I gave him is $850 for 1 Terabyte so sheaper than your solution, and puts 100MBPS easily. and in addition he gets a warranty. building it by yourself in your case did not save you money and if any problems ocurr you're on your own. now people are going to think I was paid to say that. not at all but it is clear that it is a better less headache solution.
