mskin
Just replaced motherboard and processor (amd atlon 64 3500). Re-formatted and installed XP Pro. After install, upon boot, i get a "Hal.dll corrupt or not found" error. Anybody have experience with this? I've tried a numberof things, including installing sp2 wich replaces the existing hal.dll file. hal.dll is in system directory, but still - error occurs. windows will not start normally unless i have the cd in. if i put the cd in, i don't get the error and boot normally although i cant install many programs. help appreciated. thanks

Ernest Burden III
What's amazing about this is that we have something running our machines called 'HAL' No-one was at work in the Un-Intended Ironies Department at Microsift that day?
JHalton
''I dont want to talk about it Ernest. I think you are been irrational Ernest. What seems to be the problem ernest....Daisy Daisy give me your answer do........'' heh heh heh
MooseDog
Hardware Abstraction Layer. this i know from the following act of gracelessness: was using the end of the vacuum to suck the dust and crap out the inside of the comp and accidently knocked the r.a.i.d. connection from the hdd off its mb prongs (so gently that i didn't even notice). as i learned, during the p.o.s.t. the bios first checks the status of the hardware attached to the motherboard, then segues into the software, which kinda makes sense. short story, make sure everything is well attached
Ernest Burden III
''I think you are been irrational Ernest.'' I'm being perfectly rational. In fact, I'm going to go out into space without my helmet in a pod that is controled by a bi-polar artificial inteligence.
mskin
thanks for the help, or should i say humor. im just glad to see a couple of people had some fun at my expense while beeds of sweat poured from my forhead onto my motherboard. I didn't spend the time to configure my bios. Had a PCI sound card installed with onboard sound card set to on, BIOS was looking to slave hard drive for motherboard, and SATA was on (while i have no SATA drives). after making these changes in the bios, xp installed fine.
