AJLynn
I have 3DS Max 7 and various updates - SP1 and the 7.5 update (Hair&Fur Extension, Viz Extension and mental ray Extension). What I would like to do is set up machines that don't have a full Max install on them but only mental ray 3.4, so they can run the raysat service and be "satellites" in a DBR environment. The documentation seems to hint that this ought to be possible, but I can't find anything that tells me how to do it given the discs I have. Does anybody know about this? abicalho
You can only do that if you have mental ray standalone. It seems like you do not, so you have to install MAX 7.5.

Crazy Homeless Guy
you can script install 3dsmax and updates with a batch file. all you do is run the batch and walk away. everything installs, and is ready to go.
abicalho
They do make it hard on us, don't they. It's not hard, it's logical. If you have Distributed Rendering from one renderer, you need that renderer - you either get the renderer as a standalone app or the renderer as embeded in the app. Honestly, setting up mental ray standalone is a nightmare, has always been, and it's something that doesn't come from Discreet. Setting up MAX 7.5 for Satellites is as simple as hitting 1/2 dozen buttons in an Install dialog. Nothing else. Pick your choice.
