ecastillor
Its looking great so far...i suggest tou try different grass textures to se how they look...
Tommy L
Im not using a texture to create the displacement, just the perameters in the modifier panel. When i try using a bitmap it looks crap. Has no-one got any ballpark figures for the '3dmapping/subdivision' part? Does it matter how big the polygon is that is being displaced? Do I need to subdivide the geometry previously? I really need a tutorial, any links?
Woody
Alright Tom, Personally I'd keep away from using Vray disp on grass as it takes ages, just use it when absolutely necessary, ie bricks and don't use it at all on ani's. If you still wanna give it a go try the jpg attached using a mapping of 1000 or 2000 mm and a height of 20 mm. Hope that helps. Mark.

infarq
try to decrease the size of the UVW mapping that's the reason becuase your grass seems to be too coarse another thing you could try is to turn OFF generate GI to decrease rendering time and increasing the receive GI parameter, something like this genGI OFF recGI x3.
Tommy L
Thanks Woody, ive seen some great results with vray grass and im not that fussed about rendertimes, so cheers for the map. Hope all well that side of the Pennines. Tom Thanks Luis, Ill give it a go. Tom
LuckyST
Im not using a texture to create the displacement, just the perameters in the modifier panel. When i try using a bitmap it looks crap. Has no-one got any ballpark figures for the '3dmapping/subdivision' part? Does it matter how big the polygon is that is being displaced? Do I need to subdivide the geometry previously? I really need a tutorial, any links? for the displacement use the "cellular" material shadder. and for the difuse, use anything "green"... the uvw mapping is important also...to reduce the repetition. here's my usual settings. I set uvw to 10m/10m/10m 1x/1x/1x difuse -anything green (map tile x,y,z, 1,1,1) displacement - specular (map tile x,y,z, 10,10,10) that way, the "difuse" map gets repeated only once every 10 meters, so it doesnt seem unnatural, and the displacement creates grass small enough. depending on the distance from the object, increase the "uvw box" to a bigger size (example 50m/50m/50m) to reduce the "repetition" effect. the difuse map is not that important for this sort of grass. also, instead of using the regular "displacement material" you can use displacement modifier (vray displacement)... it works exactly the same... for more info... check this out. go to google, search "spot3d vray" (sorry,.... I cant post a link since the forum finds it spam )
