Drunkenbear
ok here is the problem. I have those annoying black spots when doing a fg and gi render, but I didnt have when i last did a render yesterday. I have added a few new objects but the black marks seem to be appearing all over the place in a random manner. I am on a deadline and am already late because of this, can someone help me with a suggestion, I'm loosing my hair rapidly!! Cheers

derijones
Are you using Mental Ray? I've had problems with them (using Maya/Mental Ray) and can't pin them down to anything certain, they seem very random. Like the other guy said - increse the reflections/ refractions and sampling. Check your lighting scheme (I've deleted the HDRI dome amd spotlight and reinstated them again before and it's done the trick, but not on other times). Have a look at this page if it helps: http://tinyurl.com/8vu87 Best of luck Deri
J.R.
I was on a deadline too and I tried almost everything to get rid of them. this must be a kind of bug. i had standard-materials with ortho-bitmaps applied combined with DGS and Mental-raymaterials. i increased the fg-count the fg-radius, created a hemisphere skydome instead of environment, tried different filters, raytracing-depth, different BSP-settings, everything, but the black spots didnt go away. The only thing which solved my problem was: TURN ALL MATRIALS INTO DGS-MATERIALS OR MENTALRAY-MATERIALS AND THE BLACK SPOTS ARE GONE!! It took me 1 hour to convert my matrials, but it was worth it. after that I had never problems with black spots again.
