cable run lengths?

Recommended Posts

How long can you run ethernet cable? My cable modem connects to the main PC via ethernet, but the modem seems to put out a lot of RF and its degrading the signal strength on a LinkSys G wireless LAN--and ruining the radio reception on my studio stereo. So I was thinking of putting the modem somewhere else--like my basement--and running cable. So how long can the cable be without a hub or repeater?

I run my big printers off a different PC but that is by USB which has a maddening limit of something like two meters.

True, its 300' but if you put a switch every 300' you can go on and on and on... across the ocean... we might end up working on the same local area network...

BTW: ther are much longer than 2m USB cables to buy, so I would assume you might be wrong on that number, but thats not anything I know for a fact.

Thank you both.

OK, I will only need about 45 feet to put the cable modem in my basement, so I'm good there, should I decide to do that.

I went through the FAQ section of Belkin's site and found that they say you can get 5 meters (about 16 feet) from PC to a powered hub (which I use) and then another 5m to the device. That works!
