JamesTaylor
after effects - its so easy to use, just like photoshop but with a timeline. Its also so more flexible than premiere the other industry standard app for video compliation / editing. Finally there is combustion but i've never used it so can't really comment on its abilities - maybe someone else will?
lambros
Combustion seems to be as talented as After Effects, perhaps even better. Its weird interface may put off some people at start. Actually, it is not as weird as it may seem, we are all used to Adobe like interfaces and this makes the learning curve a little steeper.
skauty
I agree, After Effects would be the easiest way to do those kind of effects. It is an extremely powerful program and is simpler to rap your head around, due to the familiar interface. Combustion has a really cool particle effects generator built into it, but personally that would be the only reason I would choose it over AE if I didn't have any experience with either. They're about the same price.

MetaHumanitY
There´s also Digital Fusion. No soundsupport and more a composting app, but very powerful and intuitive.
Brian Cassil
So, in after affects, can you export video files the same way you can in premeire with the same codecs and file formats?
kaylmyers
Yep. Just think of AE as Photoshop for video. But yes does support multiple codec exports. (just not at the same time , he heh...)
Tommy L
In premiere's defence, it may be crap and very limited, but it is incredibly easy to use. If all the graphics are created outside the program its easy to stich it all together with its 'rubber band' approach.
skauty
Premiere and After Effects are actually for slightly different markets albeit with much crossover. Premiere is primarily a non-linear editing tool with some basic compositing features. It's higher end comparisons would be Final Cut Pro or an Avid editing suite, used in broadcast editing or for feature films. After Effects is a composisting/special effects program but can also handle editing. It is used extensively in commercial work and some film, but most high end special effects work is done with Discreet Flame, Flint, or Inferno. Combustion is basically a desktop version of these suites. After Effects is far more versatile, but for simple transitions and such Premiere is probably easier to use.
