Tim Nelson
Ever since I put my computer together late last year, I've have heard one of the 3 hard drives clicking every now & then. It's the kind of click that you would hear when you first start up the machine, but this one does it for no apparent reason when I am just sitting here working. Lately it's been getting a lot more frequent and it's really starting to worry me. I have 3 drives and I'm using one of them to back up the other 2, so hopefully I would be covered if either of them fail. Is there something I can do to see which one of them is doing this and what the problem is?
Ernest Burden III
Check the maker's website (or original discs that came with the drive) for a utility to check the drive. Although those may be limited to verifying the media, not the mechanism. Or call the company, ask tech support about it.
Chad Warner
Most drive manufacturers have utilitys that you can download and run from a boot disk that will check the drives. That'd be my first step. Either that, or run scandisk. (right click on the drive, select properties, then tools, then error checking.
AJLynn
You can try turning on SMART in your bios setup - I've had clicking hard drives that SMART saw a problem with, and others that it didn't, so it's hit or miss. But it does sound like your drive is dangling on the edge of failure...
Iain Denby
I have this all the time and was told reassuringly by my computer expert that it was normal (I've forgotten the reason for it). It does *sound* serious, I must admit.

ecastillor
when that happens to me, usually, the hard disk fails in 24 hours...I have gone through 2 dozen hard drives in the last two years... perhaps try a different type of hard drive? one hard drive each two months sounds a lot!...not even running the machine day and night non stop would kill the hard drive in two months

JHalton
Check your not using IBM Deskstars. I lost 3 over the years. They start to crunch and grind over and over again and then they are fine. But not for much longer afterwards. http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,67608,00.asp

Frosty
when that happens to me, usually, the hard disk fails in 24 hours...I have gone through 2 dozen hard drives in the last two years... If you have blown that many hard disks, you are either dropping them, shocking them, or not keeping them cool. My bet is that your drives are way too hot.
