Tim Saunders
i tried running a scene using vray free with standard lights (target direct-sun, and skylight) with radiosity inactivated. do i need to use any particular exposure control? i figured there would be some vray exposure control, but no. also, there has got to be something similar to radiosity that is calculated by vray, but where do i get to that? it doesn't appear to be any settings under advanced lighting. also, about half way through the rendering i got an ugly message that said something like "unhandled exception: rendering region, last marker is at globalillumlight desk::illuminate. send all or part of your scene to chaosgroup. click okay or continue. and after rendering was done this is what vray messages i had. what exposure control should i use? what about physical scale? what lights should i use to set up an exterior? should i uncheck radiosity? there has got to be some settings that will calculate something similar to radiosity, but where? are there any help files for vray free? so far my scene is almost completely white except for my background. i do see some crazy red reflection of an rpc car. manta
First don't use a skylight or radiosity, simply create a standard light direct or omni, open up the render dialog and go to renderer tab, set the image sampler to adaptive subdivision, then go to indirect illumination, and turn it on, then go to environment, and switch on GI environment, that'll get you started... Tommy L
I always turn off exposure control.

Tim Saunders
okay i'm back to trying this plugin out. i still get the warning i posted earlier. anyone know what that means?
Tim Saunders
ooh. i think it was due to my skylight i had in the scene. as soon as i took it out, it rendered without any warnings. still need to figure out some settings though. now, what about materials? i don't think vray free comes with any materials, so do i just use whatever? Tommy L
Theres a few free libraries knocking around on the net you can download. Goole search it. I think evermotion have a free one. Tom.
Tim Saunders
i checked out those libraries. another thought along those lines. how do i set up a vray material? i assume i can still use any map i want, i just select vray map instead of standard when i "get material?" how do i load my maps in the material though? i would think in the material editor there would be a vray selection with the blue ball next to it (like standard). but there is not a place to load a map in the vraymaterial with the green thingy next to it. below is what is shown when i select vray material. hope that all made sense. i think i confused myself, but i don't now how else to word it. danteprojetos
It's my understanding that vray materials don't work with vray free, but I could be wrong. Cheers.
Tommy L
I havnt used vray free, but youve ot a vraymap there rather than a vraymat. When you go to get material, select vraymaterial. It should have similar mapping slots to the standard. If you cant see it there then i guess vraymaterials dont work on free. Bummer, cos theyre fantastic. manta
I'm pretty sure you only use the Vraymap in place of raytrace (reflection, refractions) and just use any 3dmax material for everthing...
Aaron2004
I'm working a little with V-Ray free now, and I'm curious as to what the advanced version would have over the free version. If I want to do walkthroughs, is it possible to animate with Vray free, or is the advanced version more suited for that? Also, can I lightmap with Vray free? Thanks! Aaron aaron, as i have learned from this thread and others like it, vray free does not feature the vray materials. you just use the material types in max-viz. i also believe there are some lights that come with the full version. you shouldn't have any problem rendering animations. i have just been doing stills at my job. down;oad it and try, i mean it's free. what have you got to loose?
