JamesTaylor
People will need more info - Renderer etc. - post some screen shots of your render / light settings and i'm sure some one will advise you
qwarto
jat10005 here are my settings and found out that when i check the 2-sided box in blin parameters here's what i get. is this normal? by forcing 2 sided does this affect the render time? by the way im using mental ray on 3dmax6. enigma
what primitive did u use while creating the walls? i think its caused by the geometry...have u tried applying the 'shell' modifier? i think its 1 of the best way arouund it. don't forget to check the 'straighten corners' option in the mod
qwarto
I started creating a box then convert to editable poly then used the flip command in the roll out parameters. I'll try your suggestions enigma, thanks. probable i'll try it tommorow when im free i need to rush something 1st. thanks guys.
JamesTaylor
unfortunately i'm not a mental ray user, so can't give any direct advise. however, you will be able to reduce the mottled appearance of the walls by increasing the GI settings in Mental Ray, this will increase your render times but give a better solution
AJLynn
Increase your number of GI photons in mr indirect illumination settings (10,000 is default but 100,000 is better) and try using Final Gather to smooth out the lighting blotches. (For test renders set Final Gather sampling much lower, like 100, but 1,000 for production - it is SLOW.) Blotchiness is one of the unfortunate things in mr that they've been making improvements to lately - the version they give you with Max 7.5 is like a whole different program. The reason your lighting changed so much when you used the 2-sided materials was that with 1-sided, light can pass through from the back side to the front - you probably have the walls made out of some simple single surface and the light is outside so instead of through the window only you were getting the light through the whole wall. The new scenario is much more realistic. Increase your global energy multiplier to make the light bounce around a bit better and get more light throughout the room. enigma
great suggestions guys but i think marlon's problem is the that the walls doesn't appear to cast any shadows at all. If u look at the render, the sunlight is directly casting its illumination on the shelves. the wall is excluded from shadow casting. Marlon, also check if the wall is excluded from shadow casting. raysyu
I think this model has a geometry problem. Please check the dimension and units. Mental ray renderer is very sensitive to geometry size associated with photon volume. So does the mental ray light. if you use scale tool in process, mental ray will NOT recognize the scaled number, which will generate sysmetic disorder. if ur geometry is close to the size of photon, shadow will not be cast, and the wall will be either over-bright or very nasty. So the first step to set up a model rendered by mental ray, you have to figure out what units and scale you gonna apply.
