Richard McCarthy
Many ways, but how does this relate to real-time CG?? You can use the easy way, using 2D clip map of sequence/movie of fire (Artbeat I believe have put out a nice package of that, check http://www.artbeats.com) The clipmap technique also works in most situation in (even in VRay) Real-time CG too. As long as the 3D engine supports transparent clipmap and sequences. Another way to do it is to use particle (Max built in, or you can try from same maker of VRay "Aura" - http://www.chaosgroup.com/software/aura/ - mind you it is currently in closed beta stage) to simulate fire as particle. I am not much of a particle buff, so I wouldn't know that, but check Max Manual for that. The same can be done in real-time as long as engine supports particles (which most do nowadays)
