mr. a
I have decided to get an FTP site to enable me to send / retrieve files with my future clients and not be restricted to various email account restrictions (on both ends). I read the article on this site: http://www.cgarchitect.com/news/newsfeed.asp?nid=2662 which indicates that Fast Send is very user friendly. Are there any advantages of this (or similar) sites. over a traditional FTP site. If I was to get an FTP site- any recommendations on hosts? Thanks Aji
Jeff Mottle
There are a couple advantages to both. Here is my take: FTP - Able to tranfer really large files (over 1GB) - You will be restricted to bandwidth or have to pay for extra if you do a more traffic than expected - Depsite FTP being easy there are still alot of clients that can't seem to figure it out. - If you have a lot of clients it can be a pain to have to set up passwords for each and their own directories. This is doubly so if you do not own the server and your host has to do this for you. FastSend - They don't handle files over 1GB too well. - It's really userfriendly on both ends - You can still password protect the files - There are no bandwidth restrictions that are associated with cost - You can't keep the files online, they only stay there for 2 weeks before being removed from the FastSend servers - Compression is done for you on the fly and you can just drag and drop files from various locations to send them. Overall, I would use Fastsend in most situations. I used it to receive over 400 images for the 3D awards and over 50 animations. Aside from a few times of really high traffic and big files that slowed things down a bit, it worked perfectly.
mr. a
Thanks allot. You hit the nail on the head with security issues- password protected folders for various clients, as I would definately want this, but would probably curse everytime I had to set up a new one with little or no notice. The 1G limitation - is per email (I assume) - and seems reasonable. The 2 week timeline I can live with, as it would force me to keep up with files and archive them appropriately in a timely manner. 'Userfriendliness' is always a plus. Thanks again. I realize I was making this decision more difficult than it need to be. I just wanted to be sure before commiting to a company. FastSend it is. manta
Hey Jeff...was wondering if you are still using Fast send, and if you're still happy with it...
Jeff Mottle
I only used them for the 3d awards submissions a few years ago. I have not used them recently. I know they have changed the software a lot since I last used it.

Jeff Mottle
Thanx Jeff...do you have a favorite software for file transfers between you and clients ? I've been looking at a couple, but not sure which one to use... I have my own FTP server, so that's what I usually use. The FTP server I have also has a web interface in case people don't have or don't know how to use an FTP client. The FTP server I use is called Serv-U http://www.serv-u.com/
