Creating Signs

Does anybody know how to use a jpg or picture file that has an emblem in the middle with nothing on the sides to create a sign with just the emblem. I really would prefer not having to model a plane in the shape of the outside edge. I thought there was a way to take a tif and appy it so you can just have the area that is not transparent, but when I try this it shows the area that was formerly transparent as Black. If anybody has any idea it would be good

If the 'transparent' part is actually white or black, make a monochrome version with the emblem in contrast to the background and use this as an alpha map for your image.

That's great but how did you get on with your sign problem?

I went into Photoshop. Edited the original Jpg. saved it as a tif. originally when I edited I used the color selection tool and it had areas that it didn't remove when I made the edges transparent. Then I put it in viz and it worked. I have to get more used to using the path tool it works a lot better than any Lasso tool or the color selection tool. Give me some time and I will post the finished product for critiques.
