Building a Spec

Recommended Posts

Hello

Im looking to build up a PC with a Spec to enable me to do Walkthroughs. I dont want a machine that will struggle, but I also dont want to pay for the Moon on a Stick. Can anyone give any advice on an ideal Spec for this. I am lost in the decision of Graphics Cards and just how much difference one makes from the other.

Thanks

I would tell anyone doing Visualization professionally that you have to have a dual processor machine. I like the Opteron chips that AMD is making right now, I think there going to be on top for a long time to come. Video card is a harder topic, but Nvidia just came out with a Quadro FX1100 that looks very nice. Ram shouldn’t be lower than 1 gig, I would recommend 2 gigs or higher. Don't forget about the hard drive, 7200 rpm is bare minimum, but I would get a 10,000 rpm drive if at all possible. :)

Darran,

Do you have a price range you want to stay in? Bottem line is you get what you pay for. I would personally invest the most money in the CPUs and ram then move into graphics cards then lastly into hard drives and other things. Let us know what you are willing to spend and I am sure you will get all the feedback you ever wanted and more.

Thanks for the info.

I use 3DMAX. And AutoCad. I am not sure about what price I guess between £700-1000 for now with an intention to upgrade later. Building, Animating,Rendering - I intend to do it all on this machine.Any views are greatly appreciated.

What renderer are you using?

If your using Vray, Brazil, or Final Render, I'd stick by a Xeon recommendation. If you were going to be using Maya though, I'd swap to a dual opteron recommendation. (Crazy how that works eh? )

The Quadro FX 1100 is a great card, and actually cheaper then the old FX 1000.

Make sure before buying a PSU for your system, that you download the motherboard manual for your particular config.

This will save ALOT of heartache.

Many Xeon's and Opterons require EPS branded PSU. An EPS12v+ psu has additional connectors that a standard ATX power supply doesn't have.

Wattage is not the only requirement, you MUST make sure you have all the connectors for your particular motherboard.
