I'm sorry to say that i dont like the outside texture of the house ,it looks like a mapping error and is there a closer shot ??

Really? Because I'm lovin it! But I appreciate the opinion anyway. It's supposed to look like strips of rusted metal. Yeah I do have a closer shot.

BTW, many of you may recognize that this is based heavily on the architecture of Rick Joy.

nice image and nice design !

but do i see a campfire in front ?

maybe you can introduce some vegetations arround ( maybe in your plan...) also put some peoples carefuly placed ( also problably in your plan)...

maybe i would lower a bit the camera...

when is the deadline ?

good luck !!

looks really good brian. i really really like your lighting. perfect tones! not sre how close you are going to get for the final product, but if you do here are my thoughts. i do like your strips of rusted metal. if they are strips i think we should see some more bump between the strips, not just the ripply bumps you currently have. the bump just makes it look like one solid sheet. i love you stone work on the outside ground. i might suggest some bump on those flat stones though. i love the shapes, they just seam too perfectly chizzled at this point. like you said, the vegitation will add a lot of depth, especially if you can pull off a gradual blend into the misy background. keep posting wips.

Excellent comments everyone, thanks!

i am not sure about the building behind the house to the left. at first it reminded me of a small camping trailer on wheels or concrete blocks.

Having grown up in the desert, I know that the camper on cinder blocks is more typical of a desert home than what I have shown, but the back left structure is actually meant to be a artist studio.

Darker, more contrast for the city in mid-background, and darker, more saturated (maybe prrple) but not more contrasty foreground rocks.

Great ideas! I'll plan on doing all that but probably not untill post.

The fire is more like a fire-pit, which isn't all that uncommon in high desert homes (it actually can get quite cold at night). I'm working on the vegetation now, but I don't have any plans on adding people right now, maybe I'll try it in post. Hmmm, lower camera angle would mean lowering the rocks, and the terrain, and changing up all the vegetation... probably not going to happen. Deadline is the Aug 5th, but since I'll be at Siggraph 1-4, I'll need to get it done in the next day or two.

Tim, I think the extra bumpyness to some of the textures will show up better in the final images. I'll try to address the mist or dust in post as well by rendering a z-depth element.

Here's some vegetation, there will be more. I've turned the interior furniture off as well as the displacement to speed up rendering at this point. Also, I'm having a hard time getting the shrubs shadow planes to cast shadows properly so I guess I'll PS them.

hi Brian

yes it is better with the vegetation.. specially around the house. I am not sure about the tall cactus all around. Maybe less is enough and more dryed lower bushes. and maybe a desert fox ( :D )

yes i was not against the campfire, i think it is really nice and that's bringing another layer to the image and then maybe you can play with it to place peoples.. not necerally around it but just try to tell a story by the way you place them... i leave it to your imagination... a scene from a movie or something.. it will bring depth to the image and let the viewer believe in it...

more wip !!!

I think it looks great. To me though, it's bordering on just a little too dark - even on my lcd. I just want to see more of the environment I think, even though I know that the real showcase should be the house. Adding some more colored environment/ambient light would help.

He's cute.

But way too much vegitation for my tastes. The starkness of the first post is really nice. Don't make it aboput cactii, make it about rock, house and evening fire. How about a few sparks rising up to mix with the city sparkle--a great tie-in.

Hmmm... I'm gonna have to think about the cacti, especially since that's the second comment about there being too many... but the sparks idea is killer! I'm on it!

I think if you removed some of the cacti in the back and distance itd be much better off, however the ones closeup and immediately around the house are excellent imo, especially if you are basing it off of some of rick joy's work. He really tries to work his footprints around the desert doing minimal/no damage to the environment... so if you could even put smaller desert shrubbery around the house without taking away from the focus of the house that would give it more authenticity. Really great render.

check out rick joy's palmer house in Tuscon AZ. A great example of many of his characteristics that make him a great up and coming architect.

nice job... great images. :)

Well, I've been struggling with the placement of the cacti and desert shrubs for a while now. I'm not sure if it's just right yet or not, but it's going to have to do. I think it's better at any rate. This is my final wip, I still need to do all the compositing and enhancements, like creating shadows for the shrubs, giving the cacti some subtle highlights, adding the fire and sparks, and maybe some people. I hope the final finishes rendering before too long so I can do all that stuff at lunch today.

good job brian. this is for sure among you best that i've seen. i bet it was fun to work on a relatively simple structure so you could spend more time on the composition and stuff. when the though of peeps came up in earlier posts i hesitated, but i think these work perfect. the light is hitting them just right. i take it your back from sigraph? we'll have to catch up about it.
